Blades sign Nimmo, Callander weighs in, Ferguson to AHL

Posted July 8, 2008

Lots to report, and I have more quotes and info in a story online. I'll try to do it briefly with a bit more opinion for the blog.

First of all, the Blades announced another signing today. David Nimmo, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound, 25-year-old center who was last year's CHL rookie of the year.

You see CHL and automatically you think this is a Malcolm Cameron signing, right? Cameron spent four years playing in the CHL, Nimmo played last season in Amarillo, Texas -- the same state Cameron coached in. Seems obvious, right?

But Nimmo said again that it was Blades GM Craig Brush who contacted him first, before Cameron was even signed. Now it could be that Cameron gave Brush the name, because Cameron couldn't call guys until his deal with Florida was official, but still it seems the Blades GM has done recruiting for all the already-announced signings.

Doesn't mean Cameron isn't the great recruiter we've all heard about -- it just means the two of them are both skilled recruiters, which should make for a very talented Blades club, right?

Anyway, one thing the Blades lacked on the forward corps last season was size, and signing Nimmo is a step toward making sure that doesn't happen again. The guy was also absolutely on fire in the CHL last season scoring 41 goals and adding 43 assists in 64 games. He was also a Southern Conference all-star.

"(The ECHL) is a step up ... a jump for me for sure, but hopefully I can make the most of it," Nimmo said on Tuesday. "I'm hoping to contribute like I did last year ... get some power-play time ... just be a big offensive presence around the net."

Lots of us probably already have seen Nimmo play, too, believe it or not. He was a member of the Mississippi RiverKings squad that played the Blades in two exhibition games last season at Germain Arena. He didn't get much playing time, though, and was traded to Amarillo before the regular season.

One more nugget from Nimmo -- he said the only guy he knows from his Blades team next season is Brad Herauf. The two played against each other in juniors in Saskatchewan. The Blades haven't released Herauf's signing yet, but here's another sign that Herauf is on his way back to FL -- as was already assumed.

CALLANDER UPDATE: Here's another guy the Blades would love to see sign for next season. I just looked at his #s again, too, and he'd be a coup to re-sign.

The 5-foot-11, 181-pound forward was tied for second on the Blades in goals last season, with 25 -- despite missing 25 regular season games. He was also a strong two-way player, finishing the regular season at +22.

Plus, he got the dirty goals and wasn't afraid to fight it out in front of the net.

Callander played two seasons in Europe before joining the Blades midway through next season, so he could be tempted to go back. He should also get some good consideration from AHL teams.

But Callander said an AHL deal wouldn't necessarily make him cross the Blades off his list -- a rarity as most guys would go to the AHL no matter what.

"There might be a situation where Florida is a better opportunity for us, even if I do get an (AHL) contract," Callander said on Monday.

The "us" he's referring to is Callander's new family -- he and his wife, Rachel, had their first child, Tyler, last week.

"Once you're holding that baby in your arms, everything changes," Callander said. "We have to figure out what's the best for the three of us ... I really liked Florida and we want to come back there."

Callander said he's talked to Cameron several times already, and the first-year coach said the Blades are going to be "very patient" with Callander as he makes up his mind.

I didn't think Callander would be back, but after talking to him, the prospect of him returning seems a lot more likely. We'll see what happens ...

FERGUSON TO AHL: Bob Ferguson joined Gerry Fleming as the second former Blades coach to jump to the AHL this offseason.

The Augusta Lynx announced on Tuesday that Ferguson will be the new assistant GM for the Anaheim Ducks' AHL affiliate in Des Moines, Ia., next season. Like Fleming's job, Ferguson's job gives him a place within an NHL organization. The Ducks are supposed to announce the new name of the team, as well as its logo and colors, in Des Moines tomorrow -- the team replaces the '05-08 Iowa Stars, who were affiliated with the Dallas Stars.

This marks a move into management for Ferguson, which should be a good move given his strengths in player management and recruiting contacts.

Now the Lynx become the fourth ECHL team to hire a new head coach this offseason -- I could be missing someone -- but so far it's been Florida, Ontario (Calif.), Reading and now Augusta. The Lynx said in the Ferguson release that they'll hire before the end of July. And they'll have to move quickly -- tough to recruit for next season without a coach.

You've gotta think Troy Mann is first in line for this job. He was a finalist in all three of the jobs mentioned above, and he's right there in Columbia.

Wow, busy day.

Fergy love Iowa so that is a good fit.

On paper the new guy looks good. How would you like to have been the GM that traded him before the season, only to watch him win rookie of the year?

As most of us here I would LOVE having Callander back if it is a good thing for his family. Can you see him on a line with Nimmo? Big guy brusing it out at the net with Callander surfing around for the garbage.

IMHO Callander will return, and I'm really looking forward to some hat tricks...

Nimmo - he's gonna be interesting to watch develop... good size too! (yae!)

NIMMO: Good size kid and he's a center too. Lots of scoring. Lets hope for once we have a big guy that uses his size to his advantage. Not fighting but good forechecking and back checking.

BHF thanks for the updates today. My ECHL "text line" was up and running today.

AB When I first heard I just knew this was a Cameron signing. I read what you wrote about but I am really thinking Cameron was all over this one. He like big teams, so do I....

CHIP we may have a SISCA vs. Z-ICEMAN fight this preseason.

Rumor has it CSA likes his migit porn, maybe he likes migit fighting as well. LOL

MFH:::
Now it comes to light why FERGUSON was not more interested in the Blades Head coaching position.

NOBILLI
Will he be headed to AUGUSTA...

CAMERON,
Seems like MALLIE is spending more time at his homes in Beaumont, Canada, and his new digs in SW Florida than starting with his recruiting. Maybe the boys are wise to his "promise the world, deliver the summer publix gig" talk"....

Fowards signed/pending

Bowers, Nimmo, McNabb, Baker, Callendar, Herauf, and Lukin

And, if the "big signing" is a forward, thats 8 forwards.

Throw in a few more forwards from Carolina and Florida..

If I was 'lil Ern, Id be updating my resume feverishly or applying all my time to my new business venture

MFH might be able to hook you up with some tickets as well. As many vacations as he is taking lately he might only make half of the games....

Easy there, CUBBUC. Have a little fun. We all took our hits at Cornacia last year too. Of course MFH couldn't for obvious reasons.

But more troubling is the fact that you would list ME first as not being able to catch up with CSA. Man, have you met CSA? That man is a walking Sta-Puff marshmallow. I heard at work they stopped him when he was leaving, because they though he had a TIRE under his shirt. The man was totally innocent...it was only his waist.

( seats far enough away from each other...TY Mr. Brush) The clock said 6:00 or so before the opening faceoff. By the time Mr. Biscuits and Grits..(WITH 8 SAUSAGE LINKS)( THATS WHY THE NAME HAMMY FITS...) made it up the stairs, there was less than 13:00 left in the 1st Period...

I am a little confused..did the original qualifying list include Ernie? I could have sworn that the blog said 7 qualifying offers and Ernie's name was included however it isn't included now and the blog title says 6 qualifying offers but the first line of the blog says 7. All the other places that have the list say 6 and Ernie's name is not included. So AB is he on the qualifying list or is he not???

SDW thanks for the update. He will be 100% in two weeks "if" he does not reinjure himself.

#83 Posted by BUSSYFAN on July 12, 2008 at 2:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I haven't talked to Lehun in awhile, so thanks for the update SDW. You've gotta feel horrible for him with all these nagging injuries. One thing I didn't realize until this year is how much of a beating these guys' bodies take to play minor-league hockey. It's not all fun and games, though it looks like it sometimes ...

On the qualifying offers, Cameron originally told me seven (and included Hartlieb), but the list released by the ECHL was six. So the official offers are six, not including Hartlieb. Doesn't mean Hartlieb didn't get an offer, but it makes sense that he didn't, at least an official one, as the Blades often don't make qualifying offers to their vets who live here in town.

Hartlieb doesn't want to go anywhere else to play hockey, at least from what he has told me recently. And last I talked to Cameron, he said he hoped to complete a deal with last year's captain in the next few weeks. A deal could even already be done, though I think I would've heard by now if it was.

But all indications say it's a when thing, not an if thing, if you catch my drift.

Çan someone explain why the Blades are slow in releasing the signing of players? Its been said that Herauf is a done deal and MC has been quoted that he has cut deals and has a "Big signing".Is there some strategy or are the Blades handcuffed due to not knowing how many affiliated players will be sent down? Just curious.

hook em : you may have a very valid and interesting point. CB said he did not like the idea of over recruiting, but considering how the affiliate #'s have played out in the past that is exactly what he may have to do ... this could be the reason for the very slow and steady releasing of the players. I welcome other's opinions.

BOWERS is the big signing.

He opened up his trap so they are making him sweat it a little.

AK must have lost some contacts if he is not aware of whats going on.

#115 Posted by BUSSYFAN on July 13, 2008 at 11:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

My biggest concern about "the big signing" is quite simply....

How long will he be here?

Instead of having to worry about just one affiliate calling him up, he will be a FA to any AHL team that wants offer him a PTO/SPC

Nimmo, too

The saving grace would be if this guy (the big signing) has an agreement with MC thats its the Blades and only the Blades (ie, a Vet who is content)

Nimmo will get a few shots in the AHL Im sure

#116 Posted by CSA on July 14, 2008 at 12:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Patience people. Florida has signed 4 (announced that is) but we know it is more. Only one team has signed more with 5. Three teams have signed 3, four teams with 2, one team with 2 and there are twelve teams with a big fat 0.

#117 Posted by BHF on July 14, 2008 at 7:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

------------------------------------------

And thats my concern with Nimmo

Since he's an AHL free agent at the moment, he could become a call up whore because any of the AHL teams could call him up

These types of situations can wreak havoc come playoff time much like Cameron's squad last year.

Ive seen it with Reading too many times----

Guys like Mike Kompon (as we discussed) TJ Kemp and Shawn Collymore were prime examples

But, lets get to that point before getting worked up

Suprise -- You can make money in the AHL---------

Konopka signs on -- New Tampa Bay coach Barry Melrose added another impressive coup to his motivational skills resume last week.

He got center Zenon Konopka to trade his Syracuse Crunch jersey for a chance -– and nothing more -– at making the Lightning roster.

Konopka, captain of the Crunch, agreed to a two-year deal with the Lightning organization last week. Konopka was waffling to the very end. Columbus was offering a deal that would have paid him $265,000 in Syracuse next year, compared to $100,000 if he plays with Lightning affiliate Norfolk. Plus, Konopka's tell-it-like-it-is personality backed up by a prickly, pain-ignoring playing style, had him headed for his own statue in front of the Onondaga County War Memorial.

But Melrose played the right cards in a phone call to his potential recruit.

"It was just the way he talked about the third and fourth line," Konopka said. "He had the hockey talk, (wanting) guys that are tough to play against."

That played right to Konopka's wheelhouse, as did Tampa Bay making the second season of his deal one-way. Konopka, 27, felt his career had ground to something of a halt since playing in 23 games for Anaheim 2005-06. In a season and a half with the Crunch he earned just nine games with Columbus, despite often carrying Syracuse as one of its best players.

"It wasn't about money. I think I was regressing in Columbus," Konopka said. "It (leaving Syracuse) was the toughest thing I ever had to do in hockey. At the end of the day, I felt at 27 I had to take my best opportunity to play in the NHL. Columbus came with one heck of an offer as well. I need to not have any regrets later in life."
