Pensacola Leaves ECHL

Posted June 23, 2008

More on this, with quotes from Blades President/GM Craig Brush and ECHL commissioner Brian McKenna in my story online.

In brief for the blog: this is pretty unbelievable. Shocking everyone around the league, Pensacola's ownership group told the ECHL last Monday that it did not plan to field a team for the 2008-09 season.

The decision was finalized today at the league meetings in New Jersey, and Pensacola's membership was terminated.

The schedules are done, mind you. Weekend dates have been reserved, promotional items have been printed, etc., etc., etc.

Pensacola's team prez Greg Schuh told WEAR-TV in Pensacola that the Ice Pilots planned to still field a hockey team next year, just in a different league. To McKenna, that didn't sound too logical.

To me, what this decision by Pensacola shows is a major lack of respect to the ECHL and the other teams in the South Division. Losing Pensacola at this point in the summer is going to cost a bundle to the league and to the other South Division teams, including the Blades, to reprint schedules and re-do weekend dates. Brush was clearly not happy about the way it went down.

McKenna couldn't remember a time when a team had announced its desire to leave the league at such short notice. The crazy thing is, the Ice Pilots' website still advertises season tickets for next year, and rights to a new goalie through a trade.

Obviously this was a pretty last-minute decision. It will be a bummer for the Blades to lose their only in-state rival, but distance-wise Pensacola wasn't much closer than Mississippi or Gwinnett.

The biggest thing to take from this development is just another reminder of how incredibly fragile most franchises are in the ECHL. The Blades, with a few other teams, are truly the exceptions.

A couple more items of note. McKenna said it was possible the ECHL could schedule more games for the Blades against North Division opponents, so that would be nice to see a bit more variety instead of the same five (instead of eight like last season) South Division opponents. Also, the Ice Pilots all become unrestricted free agents next year, so there's a possibility the Blades could pick any of them up. One d-man of interest might be Jean-Claude Sawyer, but in truth there's not a ton of real interesting prospects on the Ice Pilots roster from last season.

Also in question is what happens to John Marks, the ECHL's winningest coach, who was recently hired by the Ice Pilots for a two-year contract that extends thru next season?

Lots of people, including Marks, including the league, including the Blades, seem to be getting the raw end of this deal ...

As for more teams in FL, McKenna said the league was hopeful about Lakewood Ranch or maybe Sarasota. But Brush said he wasn't getting too excited until someone actually submitted an application ...

Teams in Greenville, S.C., and Greensboro, N.C., are expected to join/rejoin the South Division in a few years. But for now, the Blades remain as a rare success story in a division in a league where defunct teams continue to pile up.

Next season will be very different indeed -- a new coach in Bladesville and three fewer teams in the Blades' division. Now bring on the new players ...

I for one will miss staying on P'Cola beach & going to McGuires :( I really liked that road trip. Hopefully they will give us a better schedule for road trips now with the team staying in the same place for the weekend.

MARK'S gets the shaft again. P-Cola management needs to be fined the max allowed by the ECHL.
This just SU@#S big time!!

We'll end up with more week day games-------------------

Good Riddance Pensacola..especially with the bush league way you dropped out. AB, you are right about how it messes up a lot of things in The ECHL. MANY teams will have to deal with it. The lesson to be learned here is that The ECHL must be much more careful before adding new members. I still say that this is a good thing long term. Why would The ECHL be so bad if it had 24 teams, 12 in Each Conference, 6 in each Division, 4 in each Division making the Playoffs?? When I look at the home schedule and see Pensacola, I wasn't excited about it anyway. So once again, good riddance. Mr. Brush will do the best he can with the situation. That's my opinion fellow Bloggers...what's yours?

Cubbuc, your points are well taken but.....that was always a fun road trip.

BTW Wyman why wont the new panther goalie play here?
His age is not a factor as long as he meets the requirements;

The Playing Manual states:

It is the policy of the ECHL that 18- and 19-year-old Players shall not be prohibited from playing in the League as a result of their age. However, the ECHL recognizes the contractual status of other Leagues and honors those contracts as well as other League's enforcement procedures. Players whose rights have been protected through each respective League's Playing Rules and Regulations will be recognized and honored by ECHL clubs.

An 18- or 19-year-old Player who has cleared waivers or has been released by another league of his contractual obligation can become a Player in the ECHL. However, all such Players must still receive approval of their ECHL contracts by the League Office.

It is the policy of the ECHL that no Player should be permitted to sign an ECHL contract and play unless he has reached his 18th birthday.

If, however, an individual is under the age of 18, but has been placed on a National Hockey League team's 50-man roster, he would be permitted to play before he has reached his 18th birthday.

You are the one who said he couldt play here..... he can, he just isnt going to.

AB,
You have this in your online article....
The ECHL once had five teams in Florida locations: Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, Pensacola and Estero.

Scratch Orlando and add Tallahassee.

Great news BHF as far as your Post #6...Now THIS LOOKS MORE LIKE TRUE PLAYOFF HOCKEY!!! Next season keeps getting better and better as far as Professionalism in regards to The ECHL. Eliminate the unworthy, (Pensacola) and make The Playoffs ONLY for the worthy..( Top 2 Thirds....)

#12 Posted by CUBBUC on June 23, 2008 at 10:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What a Competitive SIX TEAM DIVISION next season!! And only FOUR of the following will make The Playoffs...Augusta...Charlotte...Florida...Gwinnett...Mississippi...South Carolina...NOW THIS IS GOOD STUFF!!!

#13 Posted by CUBBUC on June 23, 2008 at 10:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Well it stinks that P'cola did not exit properly and as a result will cost the league and it's member teams $$$$$. It will also cost the Blades a boatload of easy points in the standings. LOL

Stinkrayfan, that is a classic! Now AB will owe you a drink if you make a roadie this upcoming season! Priceless!

Stingrayfan, SDW and hambling...Better be careful or you will be childish, hateful and embarressing. The "boys" on the blog don't like anyone pointing out anything negative about AB. Doesn't matter how wrong, how speculative she is, don't let her know about it.

Oh and SDW, you are right, there is always an excuse.

BHF/SDW/IPMB22 You ladies are the "joke" not AB.

It is funny how you ladies are so quick to judge. Have any of you ever worked for a newspaper or anything like that??? If not you really dont have any room to talk do you.

ASSPILOTS: The ownership needs to have the book thrown at them!!!

BLADES: Mark my words we will get the short end of the stick on this one. More weekday games are coming. As AB mentioned maybe we will see more Northern teams. That is the only good thing that coucl come out of this.

Time to get out of this lounge chair and into the pool!!!

BHF- It's not about saying negative things about Angela it is about the way some choose to post their corrections. For a perfect example take a look at post 9 by SRF and then read post 10 by IP. Either one of those strike you as childish, hateful and/or embarrasing?

It is very sad but the average person has come to expect POOR service IE: substandard quality in most everything. I am not one of those that can except consistently poor substandard quality...whether it is soft merchandise such as clothing, or food prepared at a restaurant or articles written to inform the interested masses. I am an avid reader and can not tolerate blatant disregard in reporting inaccurate facts when using them to backup whatever point the writer is trying to make. It’s understandable and forgivable if it is an occasional error but not when 98% of the articles presented for public reading are incorrect and excuses at the ready when the inaccuracies are pointed out. After requesting nicely many times over for a professionally written ACCURATE article on a subject ( in this case Everblades Hockey) which we are all interested in without conjecture on the part of the writer and in a factual professional manner which has been completely ignored; a few of us have chosen to bring to the forefront the continuous errors to which have made the Everblades organization and their fans the embarrassment of the ECHL where once the written word about the Everblades Organization was considered premium information…

You won’t/don’t accept poor results/performances from the Everblades Hockey Team without voicing your feeling…so WHY would you accept substandard reporting from one of the major local media that “represents” them to the rest of the “hockey world”?

If that makes me, BHF, Ham, StingrayFan, SDW and others childish, hateful, an embarrassment, a joke or being completely unreasonable….so be it!

#31 Posted by IcePrinceMB22 on June 24, 2008 at 7:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I wasn't trying to start anything with the Orlando/Tallahassee correction. I guess I haven't been reading enough of this blog to know what all the fuss is about.

I think AB does a wonderful job. You people don't realize how lucky you have got it. Many fans of other cities would love to get the coverage that the Everblades get. Be careful what you wish for. If you want less mistakes, they can always give you less coverage.

Keep up the good work AB.

I think you have me confused with someone else BHF.

I may comment on how everyone with the Everblades, including the fans, think they are better than everyone else in the ECHL in every single way, but none of that has to do with AB. She just reports the way everyone else feels...lol

#38 Posted by BHF on June 24, 2008 at 9:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Living in Pensacola, let me tell you this is certainly not fun and games. First off, while it's true that the people down there should appreciate the coverage, it does not excuse the fact that there are too many mistakes made in articles. For a market like you have, that needs to be corrected.

Now onto hockey, you people can have your fun and joke all you want but this is no laughing matter to people who live in the Pensacola area. We were in the league before you were. You are just fortunate to have a continuous playoff team who no offense also never won a championship. You have a great market, don't get me wrong, but this ownership ran this team into the ground and now everyone has to suffer. It's a real shame. What you can take away from this is anything can happen. Season tickets were sold, the schedule was out and what did that mean. A lease was done for 5 years. It meant absolutely nothing. While you are throwing blame towards the owner which is fine, don't forget to throw blame on the league, the commissioner and the governors. They made a zero attempt to find a buyer, try to keep the team there. They didn't care because if they did, they would certainly not terminate the membership in a matter of a day. Shame on them.

You can continue to have your fun down there but while you are smiling because you always know you will have a hockey team, think of the staff that lost their jobs, the players who were planning on coming back (even though there were only a few), the businesses that rely on the team and of course the fans who are truly the ones suffering from all this. Thank you.
