</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/oct/02/annotated-menu-evoo-market-and-bistro/?partner=RSS</link><description>If recipes are like blueprints, then a menu is the city skyline — a panoramic view of the chef’s architectural abilities. At EVOO Market and Bistro, the menu is more Naples than New York. There aren’t any skyscrapers, dishes of awe-inspiring imagination. Instead, these dishes are hurricane proof. They may not be flashy, though flourishes pop up throughout, but they are built to weather the harshest of criticisms.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/sep/30/lets-talk-food-fruit-gods/?partner=RSS</link><description>Bright and brilliant October is harvest time throughout much of the world. Festivals, in celebration of the bounty of God and nature, are held to glorify a prolific and profitable harvest. Apples are among the most celebrated of the crops, especially here in the United States where Johnny Appleseed left a legacy of thousands of apple trees.

For years I have harbored the secret ambition to travel the world and sample the cuisine in exotic countries. Now I am satisfied to lie back in my chaise lounge and join Bourdain on gastronomic adventures without passport, uncomfortable travel experiences and without a single hit at my budget.

Bayview, on Marco Island, is one of the few waterfront restaurants that offers this convenience. Located in The Esplanade, it is just two miles from the Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge. The view of Smokehouse Bay from this spot will probably never change, but Bayview restaurant will be no more.

Technically, a true Irish pub serves specific ‘pub grub,’ which does not include Lobster Thermidor or a French rack of lamb.

St. George and the Dragon, because it was the place to go in the 1980s. With a cozy, friendly ambiance, it’s like a home away from home. I like the duck with cherry sauce they serve on Saturday and always, the prime rib.

But there’s a lot more to the cuisine of these islands than a whole roasted pig with a pineapple in its mouth. There are a bevy of influences from the new world (Spam, more on that later), old world (Portuguese colonialists left a legacy an undying love of dried sausage) and the old, old world (Japan is a major player in Hawaiian cooking).
