He isn’t a bit proprietary about being called Sir Shelley, even though he’s earned the title in his native Great Britain. No late bloomer, he was performing in the famous London Proms concerts when he barely out of the Royal Academy of Music.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/20/review-la-fontanella-serves-real-thing/?partner=RSS</link><description>In a town where most sophisticated restaurants are often flashy and sometimes kind of snooty, it’s refreshing to find a cozy place where the atmosphere is refined yet friendly and the food is superb. La Fontanella is just that: a small but upscale neighborhood restaurant and — I’m happy to say — it’s my neighborhood restaurant. Located at the Shoppes at Pelican Landing strip mall, squeezed between the pink neon lights of Cheeburger! Cheeburger! and a busy nail salon, La Fontanella manages to pull off a casually elegant atmosphere, conveyed to the customer through tasteful decor and impeccable service.

It doesn’t have to be. There’s something extremely homey and comforting about a generous portion of pork or beef next to a heap of piping hot potatoes. It looks like your favorite meal as a child and smells like Grandma’s kitchen on a cold winter day.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/06/movies-your-r-rated-primer/?partner=RSS</link><description>Although they’ve been around almost from the moment the good folks at the Motion Picture Association of America decided to start the modern rating system, R-rated comedies really came into their own in the late ’70s.
Surprisingly the ’90s, which gave way to the rise in music and TV deemed unsuitable for the youngsters, saw a decline in the number of R-rated movies. Studios found it easier to market to teens, especially teenage girls, and decided to draw the line at PG-13, which dramatically reduced both the number of F-bombs and breasts bared on screen

Maybe you moan and grimace and grab a friend’s hand, holding tight until the danger passes. It is the pure essence of the film experience. Total immersion. And all for the price of a ticket to “Saw V.” Sure, dramas or comedies can be moving, but no other genre of film has the power to shake its audience like horror films can. They can shape our nightmares and make us walk a little faster through a darkened house. They can turn a hockey mask into a harbinger of evil and make a music box sinister.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/oct/23/south-florida-101-calusa-paddling-festival-celebra/?partner=RSS</link><description>Southwest Florida’s environment is so rich and complex it takes years to get to know it. Even for full-time residents. Old time locals, fishing guides, environmental experts — we can learn a lot by discussing with them this area’s peculiar flora, fauna and ecosystem. Unfortunately, many of us can’t spare the time to get a little wisdom from these local “experts” or alternately, to attend weekly environmental science classes at community colleges.

Nemo
</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/oct/23/review-its-all-details-uss-nemo/?partner=RSS</link><description>Some restaurants hide behind extravagant or exotic décor for lack of more substantial qualities, such as culinary originality and skilled preparation.
U.S.S. Nemo, a self-proclaimed “underwater” restaurant, is not one of them. Sure, there’s a submarine theme, and yes, it’s located in a strip mall — an odd location for a chic locale.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/oct/16/charlie-daniels-requests-pleasure-your-foot-tappin/?partner=RSS</link><description>To Charlie Daniels, a stage is a stage. It’s just another place where he can continue doing the thing he loves more than anything else. So while you might think of Daniels and his blend of bluegrass, country and southern rock as more suited to playing state fairs and country bars, to him, the Philharmonic Center for the Arts will be just fine, too.
