The game of golf has lost a legend.
Women's golf has lost a pioneer.
And Southwest Florida has lost a special friend.
Patty Berg of Fort Myers passed away Sunday at the age of 88. She was one of the founders of the LPGA Tour in 1950 and won five dozen tournaments. She won the prestigious Associated Press Athlete of the Year award three times and was in the LPGA Hall of Fame's inaugural class.
She was a goodwill ambassador par excellence, never missing an opportunity to boost charities, promote the game, publicize and even sponsor tournaments and encourage young players.
The community is better off for the way she chose to use her celebrity status — graciously and to do good.
One of the LPGA's budding stars, 23-year-old Catherine Cartwright, of Estero, was lucky enough to know and learn from Berg on and off the course. Cartwright sums up what the rest of us would like to say: "She's definitely going to be missed, but boy, did she have a great life."
We have been enriched by Patty Berg's presence and are saddened at her passing.
