Rockford, Ill., schools Superintendent Dennis Thompson has been put on administrative leave, less than a week before he is due in Southwest Florida to interview for the top job in Collier County.
Rockford School Board President Nancy Kalchbrenner confirmed Wednesday that the Rockford School Board voted 7-0 Tuesday night to place Thompson on paid administrative leave until he had made his decision about what his employment future would be.
"With his indecision and rumors flying around, it has been very hard to get work done in the district," she said. "It is important that the board say that he is allowed to look for jobs, but we need to focus on what is going on in the district."
Kalchbrenner said the board appointed Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Linda Hernandez effective immediately.
Rockford board member Alice Saudargas said Thompson was invited to Tuesday’s meeting, but chose not to come.
"There were rumors going around that the board was going to fire him, which was not our intent at all," she said. "We just need to know what his plans are."
What Thompson’s plans are when he returns to Rockford might not be clear, but his plans while he is in Collier County are.
The public will have two opportunities to question Thompson when he comes to interview for Collier County’s superintendent position on Monday and Tuesday.
Thompson will be present at a public forum from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Administrative Center, 5775 Osceola Trail.
WINK-TV news anchor Lois Thome will be the moderator, asking questions posed by the audience to Thompson. Questions can be sent now, via e-mail, to input@collier.k12.fl.us. Questions also will be accepted the evening of the event, prior to the start of the forum and during the first half-hour of the forum.
Those who cannot attend the forum can watch it live on The Education Channel, cable 20.
The public also is invited to attend the Collier County School Board’s interview of Thompson at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Administrative Center. The interview will be broadcast live on The Education Channel, cable 20.
Collier School Board Chairman Steve Donovan said he hopes the public will come out to meet and question Thompson.
"It has been my No. 1 goal to be open and to tell these detractors to take a minute, come with an open mind and understand why he is best for the job," he said. "I would not put my political career and my reputation on the line and not think he was right for the job."
Donovan said the decision to bring Thompson in to interview isn’t based on emotion, but on facts.
"The fact is, we can do better than we were doing," he said.
Donovan has said he would like the board to vote on whether to hire Thompson at the board’s Thursday, Aug. 16, meeting.
Kalchbrenner said the Rockford School Board has its regularly scheduled board meeting Tuesday, Aug. 14, but added that because Thompson will be interviewing in Collier County on that day, the board likely will not come to a conclusion about Thompson’s future until later.
"We are trying to take this, to some extent, one step at a time," she said. "Next week, when there is more information, we will gather again and work on the next step."
Saudargas said she is concerned about the fate of many projects that Rockford has on its plate, which could be in jeopardy if Thompson leaves.
"We need someone to see these to fruition . . . It came as a surprise to all of us that he was in talks with Collier County," she said. "I don’t know what the board is expected to do. This is a temporary stopgap until he comes back from Naples and lets us know one way or the other."

Test scores have not risen under Thompson in Rockford. High school scores have gone backwards. Elementary tests underwent a major overhaul which gives the false impression gains were made because educators took credit to advance their careers. Most school districts in Illinois outperformed the gains that Rockford made, making Thompson a below average superintendent in Illinois. Unfortunately, the Collier school district is under the impression that Thompson improved test scores in Rockford as if he's Superman and that is not true. Collier is already paying for his plane ticket under these false assumptions and could end up hiring him based on fraudulent test score gains, costing the district more millions during the length of his contract and those he brings in. Do you think it will be fair that more of your employees will lose their jobs based on the false perception of academic improvement when in reality the tests were made easier?

He's not in trouble. He's willing to risk his current job to come to Collier. Now that takes guts. Let's hire Thompson now. We need a man like that.

Bring him in, if that's what you want to do. Give him specific, measurable goals, and hold him to performing. Do an audit, and identify the waste and corruption. He fixes things, he stays. He doesn't fix, he goes.
No lifetime contracts. And no more Collier lifers. Dan White and Ray Baker were enough.
When the military promotes higher level officers, they are transferred to another command. Fresh eyes spot the crooks and the malingerers and weed them out without hurting "old friends".
Same thing should apply to CCPS.

Right Bananas, if he is as good as he says he is, he should be willing to prove himself to the District first. Granted he should be given a fair and equitable contract but not one that lets him walk all over the school district without some type of action that can be taken if he doesn't perform as he should. A contract needs to be written so the taxpayers, staff and students are not at risk to pay out a ton of money if he doesn't work out. I don't get it with these Superintendent and high staff positions who don't remember that the reason they were put in those positions was to work for the schools, staff, taxpayers, and most of all the students. They get in those positions and just do what they want and think we are suppose to sit back and take it. That is tiring and old, not to mention costly not only in dollars, but in so many ways.

Great job with the e-mails NDNs. Are you serious that you did that this way? Yes we all know that e-mail is public record, but now you have not only printed th emails in the paper but also the full names of citizens, private e-mail addresses, and sometimes their phone number. In this day in age anyone could record the names, addresses, phone numbers or any other information and they could do harm to thier homes, make inappropriate phone calls, etc. The least you could have done was cross out the contact information. You could have left the name for validity I suppose, but anything else should have been marked through. It is terrible you would do it that way. Sad but true, Business people could even use this information to solicit business, put them on mailing list, or e-mail list and then they will start receiving tons of unsolicted e-mails, etc. Once again, thinking helps.
