Piece by piece, a community’s social services network comes together. Some providers are veterans; others are new. They all play a part in addressing needs that strengthen families and ease pain and suffering.
A ray of light on the horizon comes from Youth Haven in East Naples, which has sheltered and counseled abused and neglected children for nearly 40 years. Now Youth Haven officials aim to branch out and offer mental-health counseling to other children and their parents and guardians. Clients would pay what they can afford.
Officials at the David Lawrence Center in Golden Gate say the Youth Haven project would complement rather than compete with services provided at DLC’s Golden Gate Parkway campus.
When it comes to troubled youths and those closest to them — who want to help before troubles spiral out of control and do lifelong damage — we ought to seize every opportunity. If that quality of life improvement can be provided by a longtime, trusted friend, all the better.
Rather than rest on its laurels, Youth Haven is still looking to make new and better contributions.
