Doris Reynolds has no intentions of leaving her post as city historian any time soon.
She also doesn’t plan to stop using her title as a marketing tool either.
That’s what she told the Naples City Council during Wednesday’s regular meeting, two days after council came to a 4-3 consensus that Reynolds, a Naples Daily News columnist, shouldn’t be using her title to market for-profit projects.
“I’d like to tell council I am not going to resign my position and I am going to continue to use it whatever way I can,” Reynolds said Wednesday. “If you want to remove me, that is up to you. If you want to bring charges against me or take legal action, I stand ready to protect my integrity and my future.”
Council came to a 3-3 consensus that would allow Reynolds to keep her position. Councilman Bill MacIlvaine wasn’t present for the discussion.
While council ultimately decided not to remove Reynolds from her position, Councilman Bill Willkomm suggested that the position be abolished, and reinstated with guidelines.
That suggestion was met with outrage from some other council members.
“What guidelines do you need?” Councilman John Nocera asked. “She’s been here for 50 years.”
The issue of Reynolds’ possible resignation came on Monday when Councilwoman Penny Taylor raised the issue of Reynolds using her title to market a for-profit DVD collection.
The four-disc collection would chronicle the history of Naples from 1885 to the 20th century.
Reynolds was appointed in June 2006 when council voted unanimously to name her city historian.
“I really am hurt about this,” Reynolds said Wednesday. “I never sought this office. I would have been your Naples historian no matter if I was given this title or not.”

It's a title...what's the fuss about?

Bill Willkomm and Penny Taylor always seem to have a problem with everything...I think of them every time I drive by the entrance to Sandpiper and think of the design that we could have had. I hope that the voters remember them when the elections come again.

Doris is an obstructionist, love her, nice lady but if she had her way we'd still be driving mules around town and eating mullet out of the backs of pick up trucks.

Don't they have any real problems that they can address in Naples?

Wilkomm is rude and bombastic. I'm sorry to say that I supported him last go around. Never again.

Good morning Mr. Kneejerk:
I didn't know that you were THAT old! When was the last time you drove a mule? Wow, that must have been hard work. And when did you eat mullet out of the back of a pickup? Now that sounds like fun. Gosh, I don't remember any of that, but then I only came to Naples in 1934.

The positions the council should be abolishing is Willkomms and Taylors. (there was a 3rd who voted against her, but the article doesn't say who it was)
These two fools don't appreciate the living treasure they have.
Good for you, Doris! WE appreciate you!

Kneejerk: Your name becomes you. Penny Taylor and Wilkomm:You're upset because non of those profits are coming to you. Are you Yankees? I believe you are.
Doris: You deserve to attach your earned and respected title to anything you like and I hope you make lots of $$$ selling your DVD collection.
Don't let the ignorantly arrogant Yankees push you around!

I have never agreed with Penny Taylor about anything ever since she tried to stop the expansion of the Coastland Mall and helped stop the very needed centrally located bridge connecting Naples to Airport Road. I don't know much about Bill Willkomm, but he sounds like a real jerk! I know Doris and she's an asset to our community. Come on Bill, can't you talk some sense into these council members! Taylor shouldn't be allowed to have anything to do with city government. Period!

Hey Crackergirl,
Don't be knocking Northerners just because you don't like two people from city council.
Sorry you lost the war - ha.

Good to see that Mrs Reynolds will be staying on in her position. She is a valuable resource.
Like I said yesterday, Penny get over yourself! She is in her last term in office thank goodness.

Just a petty decision by the City Council.
Whats the big deal? Let Ms. Reynolds use
the title.
On the other hand, where is the history of Naples?
What! The opening of the original 7/11 on 3rd St.
