VIDEO: Protesters tout 'naked truth' campaign against KFC on Marco

There wasn’t a KFC in sight, but that didn’t stop three activists from protesting in front of the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort on Tuesday for what they said was the restaurant chain’s cruelty to animals.

The trio, Nicole Matthews of Michigan and Orlando residents Ileana Johns and Heather O’Connor, wore only flesh-colored bikini bottoms and covered their upper bodies with a sign protesting KFC. It included the wording “KFC TORTURES CHICKS.”

They were representing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, more commonly known as PETA.

Their campaign, “The Naked Truth,” is aimed at using shock value to highlight what the group says is inhumane treatment of chickens, and they chose their location because, Matthews said, KFC franchisees were holding a meeting inside.

“This is a fun and creative way to draw attention to the fact that KFC is slitting birds’ throats while they are fully conscious,” Matthews said.

“[They’re] scalding them to death in tanks of hot water that are meant to remove their feathers after they are dead.”

KFC officials at the hotel declined comment. However, the company's corporate office issued a statement.

"KFC is committed to the well-being and humane treatment of chickens and we're proud of our responsible, industry-leading animal welfare guidelines," said Rick Maynard, KFC spokesman. "We buy our quality chickens from the same trusted brands that consumers buy in local supermarkets. While we don't own any poultry facilities, we require all of our suppliers to follow welfare guidelines developed by us with leading experts on our Animal Welfare Advisory Council."

Car horns honked as motorists drove by, some incredulous at what they were seeing. An equal number gave the women a thumb’s up, and the trio said passers-by were generally supportive.

“If they’re looking for attention and to draw attention to the issue, this is how to do it,” said Dan Harmon, a Marco resident who was riding by on his bicycle.

Tuesday’s demonstration was the second topless PETA protest in Collier County in as many months.

In late September, two PETA workers sporting only panties, shoes and head-to-toe body paint stood near the intersection of U.S. 41 North and Pine Ridge Road, protesting what they claimed were fur sales at the Burberry store in Waterside Shops.

If they'll come over to my house, I'll give them a "nice salsiccia".

Please..more pictures! These gals related to the one's who protested at the waterside shops last month?

#4 Posted by swfl_ff on October 30, 2007 at 2:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I now I am going to get a lot of crap for this comment but what the hell. These are some ugly woman. The value meal at KFC looks a lot better than they do.

#5 Posted by scottlepore on October 30, 2007 at 2:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yeah, "T*tts and "Chicks", what more could you want?

#6 Posted by BignRich on October 30, 2007 at 2:14 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The blonde looks like a man. Perhaps only ugly people tried out for this job.

#7 Posted by mpulsivebat on October 30, 2007 at 2:15 p.m. (Suggest removal)

standup-we might assume that, but looking at their mugs I'm more inclined to think strap-on gourd.

#8 Posted by Stugots on October 30, 2007 at 2:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The commenters above sound like they are stuck in high-school mentality.
When men start commenting about a woman's appearance I can tell they are small men, or should I say little boys?

#9 Posted by naplesgardener on October 30, 2007 at 2:27 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hamster boy's at it again. Freud would probably analyze this constant "belittling" of others as compensating for a small mind and a small endowment.

#10 Posted by Scorpionsting on October 30, 2007 at 2:39 p.m. (Suggest removal)

The only reason they showed up today was the dedication of the new KFC Bush Bucket. It's filled with right wings and aholes.

#11 Posted by Treasonous on October 30, 2007 at 2:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

LOL Treasonous

#12 Posted by Scorpionsting on October 30, 2007 at 2:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

According to you Guys Posting, the KFC Chicks are not Finger Licking Good!

Do They Look Good From Far, or Far from Good To You?

But I'll Still Bet they Taste Like Chicken!

#13 Posted by JunkYardDog on October 30, 2007 at 2:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Funny, Treasonous.

And I have seen scott lepore during his abortive runs for local politics, and I wouldn't be calling anyone else ugly if I were he.

#14 Posted by Zoey on October 30, 2007 at 3:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I bet chickens all over the USA are glad these women are speaking out for them. I bet if chickens could formulate any type of idea, they would strip off their feathers -- humanely of course, put some funky bottoms on, wrap themselves in some type of biodegradable substance (some might even wear fur) and protest too.

#15 Posted by enoughalready on October 30, 2007 at 3:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Bored trust fund babies with nothing better to do.

And ugly to boot.

#16 Posted by Opinionated on October 30, 2007 at 3:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Wow, next they will have a calendar.

#17 Posted by cornandbeans on October 30, 2007 at 3:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Treasonous, it was actually the Hilary special:

two left wings, no breasts and two fat thighs!

#18 Posted by youwilltapout on October 30, 2007 at 3:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Two things about this:

1. You've got to kill'em chick'ns good.. or you can't taste the fear in the meat!

2. I've never liked KFC much, but... I think today I'm gonna go out and get some..

#19 Posted by oldtimer on October 30, 2007 at 4 p.m. (Suggest removal)

How come I always miss out on the good stuff?
I missed the Waterside Shops incident.
I missed the Applebees breastfeeding incident.
Any infor on the next site for a protest of this kind? I will buy a big bunch of chikcen wings and watch them raise cain with the staff and public at large. Better then going to a show...

#20 Posted by Jadip811 on October 30, 2007 at 4:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll buy Jadip811, but I want celery sticks with it so we can fend them off.

PETA stands for People Eating Tasty Animals

#22 Posted by FECOYLE on October 30, 2007 at 4:57 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I understand a statement from the chickens is due out shortly.

#23 Posted by factteller1 on October 30, 2007 at 5:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I love chickens...they taste like chicken. Maybe we can just talk the chickens into dieing on their own free will. Then the girls won't be mad at us chicken eaters. Please don't be mad!!

#24 Posted by almostdone on October 30, 2007 at 5:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Zoey,

I did run for County Commission in 1992 and State Representative in 1994 but I always kept my clothes on during those campaigns. I certainely wouldn't called those campaigns "abortive runs for office". I appeared on the ballot and lost both elections. And then became a successful business person in Naples.

#25 Posted by scottlepore on October 30, 2007 at 6:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Tuna

#26 Posted by 676 on October 30, 2007 at 6:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

what about human rights? i wonder if these naked ladies would die for chickens... at least they're tasty (the chickens at least).

#27 Posted by neapolitan12345 on October 30, 2007 at 7:41 p.m. (Suggest removal)

In the interest of preserving the planet it is important to eat food that is locally produced.
Forget the Kentucky chickens, gator tails make a great meal.

Good compaign. can get good results. Most of Protesters are from nudistconnect.com

#30 Posted by jessicahere on October 30, 2007 at 8:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is a strange way to protect the chickens. Get a life girls and get some clothes on while you are at it.

#31 Posted by beetlejuice on October 30, 2007 at 8:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I want some KFC now. PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals).

#32 Posted by SFGrp5 on October 30, 2007 at 8:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I didn't see the other "PETA" comment before mine. Oops. I love animals....next to my gravy.

#33 Posted by SFGrp5 on October 30, 2007 at 8:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What is our world coming to? We need sex to now sell cruelty toward animals? Listen, I hate thinking about a chicken dying, too, but I like chicken. Broiled chicken, chicken on the grill, chicken fried rice, chicken soup, chicken burrito, chicken taco, chicken kiev etc etc etc.

Put some clothes on, quit acting as though you're making a valid point naked, and think of a better way to get your ideas across to people. Just for this article I think I shall have a chicken pot pie now.

#34 Posted by FreshFace on October 30, 2007 at 9:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

the reason no one from KFC showed up is because there isn't a KFC within 25 miles of where they were! DUH

#35 Posted by FreshFace on October 30, 2007 at 9:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey treasonous..that was a good one..made me chuckle.

#36 Posted by firefly16 on October 30, 2007 at 9:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

thanks girls for standing around naked drawing attention to KFC I forgot we had that here!
I dont care how they torture the chickens at KFC..they taste SO good with honey on them! MMMM I might just get that for dinner tomorrow..

#37 Posted by firefly16 on October 30, 2007 at 9:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Looks like 3 ugly Brits to me!

#38 Posted by babbas on October 30, 2007 at 10:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

a couple of the girls look like they should be eating low fat chicken meat. Some cellulite there on those thighs!
Please do us a favor..stop torturing human beings by standing there naked when you need to dump the plump!

#39 Posted by firefly16 on October 30, 2007 at 11:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

You guys are nuts with all of your comments about these women not being attractive. Surely you can't be so studly that your standards are so impossibly high. These girls are far better looking than 90% of the people you see walking the beach on Marco.

Scott Lepore--Perhaps you should've campaigned naked! Maybe you would've won.

#40 Posted by Zoey on October 31, 2007 at 1:16 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I believe KFC did not want to make a statement based upon three reasons: 1). Most KFC employees would be challenged to read the signs to begin with.2) KFC mgmt. supports the PETA, and vegetarian citizens of our nation by employing the family members of the people who pick the very produce they eat(Jobs Americans wont do), and they even paid the extra penny per pound of Tomatoes to prove it!).3) KFC wanted to do a counter protest, but thought it would be confused with a pro Illegal/Amnesty event.
I thought KFC did the name change to mean..."Keep'em Frigging Coming" as a tribute to our disgusting immigration enforcement as YUM brands makes a fortune from it!

#41 Posted by Messina on October 31, 2007 at 7:29 a.m. (Suggest removal)

im sad, i miss all the good stuff
Also, i am confused about this statement:
“[They’re] scalding them to death in tanks of hot water that are meant to remove their feathers after they are dead.”

Scalding them to death after they are dead??????????????????????????????????
Well, that just blew it, they shouldn't have any validity in what they say.

#42 Posted by NeezDutz on October 31, 2007 at 7:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Even "The Naked Truth" is a lie.
Should be the "Topless Truth"

This story aired on NBC-2 news but has not appeared anywhere else due to the Media "picking and choosing" what stories they write or air. This is a very good friend of mine and she is devastated about her missing daughter. Please follow the link below and see the story on NBC-2, spread the word and help bring Taylor home.

Don't feed the PETA people the truth. That is like making them eat a burger.

To them that is just wrong.

Sick, sick people..

ugh,,another sad day in the hood, like the day will ever come when 3 naked gross looking pigs are actually gonna stop people from eating chicken,,did their shrink put them up to this? I'm so glad i wasnt there to witness this and lose my chicken lunch on the side walk,,talk about ugly women, my spine shivvers at the thought.

on that note, now i'm gonna go out to my chicken coup and lop off the heads of 3 or 4 chickens and video tape them running around without their heads,,,now thats a sight to see!!

#46 Posted by Chenzo on October 31, 2007 at 8:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

KFC actually uses "real chicken"! Wow, You learn something new every day.

#47 Posted by swfljim on October 31, 2007 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Also, i am confused about this statement:
“[They’re] scalding them to death in tanks of hot water that are meant to remove their feathers after they are dead.” The key word here is "meant".
The problem is some slaughter houses skip the part about killing them first and just put the live chickens in the hot water.
KFCs in Collier are horrible anyway. For the price of a meal for one at KFC you can go to Publix and get a whole chicken with two large sides and feed the entire family.

#48 Posted by anotherPOV on October 31, 2007 at 10:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

It's good to see this kind of activity around here, freedom of expression and civil disobedience. God bless America.

#49 Posted by doodlebug on October 31, 2007 at 12:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Those -ahem- ladies obviously won't be getting jobs at Hooters.
That old guy getting flashed in the first pic should file a nuisance complaint. I'm even having a difficult time choking my chicken.....sandwich down.

What is up with SW FL? Stories about naked protesting, breast feeding, and a shaved gonad pill smuggling ring!

Typically nasty weather.

I think the redhed in the middle is pretty hot. I also think that they are very brave for doing that. How many of you guys slandering these girls looks are actually comfortable enough with the look of your body that you would stand out there mostly naked? Just because you like KFC or just like to eat meat doesn't mean what they are doing is stupid and pointless. I'm not a vegetarian myself but I respect them for standing up in what they believe. This country was founded on those values and they have every right to excersize that and shouldn't be criticized!
