When you spend time with Fred Burt, he could burst into a song at anytime. Like a character in a musical, Burt is ready to sing a song for any occasion or mood. The 61-year-old Naples resident spends much of his free time writing songs. His latest tune is a tribute to the area called "Collier, Naples."

"People that know about Naples will like this," Burt said.

The lyrics describe Naples as a place where "problems erase." He highlights popular area activities such as playing golf, bird watching and dining at restaurants. He also sings his praise to "Marco Island, Everglades and Immokalee."

"After living in Naples for 10 to 11 years … I respect it so much," Burt said.

The "Collier, Naples" song is just one number in Burt’s repertoire, which he carries with him in a thick, white, three-hole-punch binder. Born and raised in Boston, Mass., Burt has written songs about Kentucky, his hometown, veterans, his wife and just about anything else that interests him. Burt’s song "Freedom of Our Country" is his most famous.

"Hollywood wanted to buy it, but I didn’t want to sell it," he said.

Burt’s singing career began nine years ago when a man asked him for his name and number, because he said he liked Burt’s voice. The next day the man’s wife asked him to perform at Island Walk in Naples. In spite of never having formal singing instruction, Burt performed for seven years at Island Walk.

Singing for veterans as well as current military brings Burt great pleasure. He served four years himself in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.

"I’ve written veteran songs because I love them," Burt said. "If you hate wars, hate wars, but don’t hate the troops."

Burt’s next project is a song about law enforcement. He should know a fair amount on the topic, since he was a deputy sheriff for Plymouth County in Massachusetts before he retired.

Anyone who wants Burt to perform his song about Naples should give him a call, he said.

"Contact me and I’ll sing it."
