As many as 28 Cubans turned up on Captiva Island on Monday, the first such refugee landing known in Southwest Florida since Fidel Castro stepped aside as the island’s dictator in February.
As the investigation continues into how they got here and what that may say about national and local border security, this much is clear:
While parts of our economy look dark right now, change is not coming to Cuba fast enough for some.
For them, our area still looks worth the risk and expense.
The promise of freedom does that to people.

So this is an editorial? And the paper's position is what, exactly? It's a bold stand on the continuing attractiveness of nice things?

I agree. The thankfully short ndn "editorials" lately just summaraize a recent event and offer no insight, analysis, perspective--only a cutesy little sitcom quip at the end. I get the feeling these are coughed-up by a junior staffer in about thirty seconds and pasted just to cheaply fill a space.

You're right 1, 2. &3. I expected 500 words justifying the end of the wet foot/dry foot policy and why these illegal aliens should be returned like all others who sneak into the country, but this is what we get. BTW, I love the way WINK TV refers to these folks as "migrants", as if they will return south after the crops are picked.

These Cuban 'refugees' paid $10,000. each for the boat ride.
If they had the 10k in Cuba they wouldn't have left.
This is being funded by local SWFL Republicans looking for more cheap labor!

If they paid $10,000 and now have no assets the next stop is the welfare system and those monthy checks. The land of milk & honey for these Cubans.
