Artist Spotlight: Barbara Culbertson
Background: Barbara Culbertson has lived an interesting life and has experienced sights and adventures some only dream about. Having lived abroad in London and Saudi Arabia, Culbertson had the advantage of visiting some of the Seven Wonders of the World.
In London, Culbertson attended Putney Art & Design School. She also had the opportunity to do brass rubbings in London, Scotland and Wales, searching out old churches for subjects. To do the rubbings, a sheet of paper is placed on top of the selected brass object, usually a plaque and then the paper is rubbed with graphite, wax or chalk. Culbertson’s rubbings are on diplay at The First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs.
During the five years spent in Saudi Arabia, while her husband worked for a major American oil company, the artist continued to paint under teachers brought in for art instruction. With sketchbook in hand, Culbertson visited ancient sites and captured images that have captivated people’s imagination for centuries.
“In Saudi Arabia, I painted lots of camels. The people also do lots of beautiful calligraphy; it’s in their history. Living there, you begin to adapt to the things typical of living in a desert climate,” said Culbertson. “I visited the Taj Mahal three times and had the opportunity to visit Egypt, Syria and Iran. While in Egypt, I sketched out the pyramids. The experiences I had in the Middle East stayed with me. They leave a lasting impression.”
Today: An avid golfer, Culbertson continues to appreciate the beauty of nature while pursuing her favorite pastime. The Bentley Village artist stays involved in her craft, serving as co-chairman of the Art Group in Bentley, 50 or so members who gather to paint. Four art classes are offered throughout the year.
At present, Culbertson is also exploring the techniques of Chinese brush painting.
“I get so much pleasure from my work in the field of art. For six years, I served as a volunteer at The Art Museum of the Naples Philharmonic. I was able to take my time and enjoy the artwork. I am so thankful for all of the wonderful experiences I’ve had in my life,” said Culbertson.
