Lee County’s gain is Collier County’s loss.

Comcast of Southwest Florida will move its headquarters from Collier to Lee in June.

In a Tuesday announcement, Barbara Hagen, Comcast’s area vice president and general manager for Southwest Florida, said the cable company had signed a lease with McGarvey Development Co. for a 57,000-square-foot building in the Eastlinks Business Park in the Gateway area of South Fort Myers.

About 250 employees are based at Comcast’s current headquarters, which are located on Tower Road, off of Collier Boulevard, between Marco Island and Naples.

Some 450 employees will work from the new headquarters, Hagen said.

The company’s 800 local employees are divided among Comcast offices in Collier, Lee, Glades, Hendry and Charlotte counties.

Hagen said the move serves several purposes.

“Most of our workers live in Lee County,” Hagen said.

Also, Fort Myers is more strategically located than the Tower Road building, which Comcast owns.

“We’ve been attracting a workforce from both counties (and Lee County’s) workforce is more accessible,” Hagen said

Asked if the Collier County Economic Development Council knows about the move, Hagen said the EDC is aware that Comcast will be relocating, and tried to talk Comcast out of the move.

EDC President Tammie Nemecek said the news was disappointing but at least Comcast would leave some workers in Collier and all of the jobs would remain in Southwest Florida.

“We talked with them but they said they were consolidating their operation,” Nemecek said Tuesday night.

From a labor force standpoint, it is sad news for Collier, but it is one of the fallouts of the past housing market when it was too expensive for employees to live in Collier, and had to travel from Lee, Nemecek said.

The high cost of gasoline also has been a consideration for Comcast workers, she said.

“We’re at least thankful that the jobs are staying in Southwest Florida,” she said.

County commissioners in Collier or Lee counties couldn’t be reached for comment late Tuesday.

Hagen, Comcast's area vice president added that the cable giant will still have only one person answering telphone calls, and customers can still expect 30 minute hold times. Hagen says Comcast will make the move sometime between 1 and 5 P.M. in June.

Also Hagen announced that with the move to Lee County your Internet connection will still be sporadic, unreliable, but expensive. You can call the help line and even though you can not get on line you can have fun with the friendly technician while they ask you to unplug things and plug them back in, and if that doesn't work click your heels together and throw some magic dust at your router.

I hope the move improves service. In North Naples the connection has been more off than on for the past two weeks. I hate it.

Don't worry. After the six months introductory period with a discounted lease Lee County and McGarvey gave Comcast, they will double their rent, and Comcast will have no other place to go. But, if they don't like it, they can move to North Carolina or Tennessee like everyone else.

They are just a f****** call center anyway...they might as well move to India with the rest of their brothers...are there idiots around Collier/Lee with the "big 3" package..starts at $100, goes to $220.00 in 12 months?.....real value!

You know... on the one hand it's frustrating that they're moving, because I can no longer just jump on my bicycle and ride over there to pay my bill.

On the other hand though, I am glad they're leaving, because every time I pass the facility I can feel my IQ going down, and then when I walk in the building, it's even worse.

Methinks that sacrificing the convenience for the sake of my IQ (which is miraculously high enough to get me into a good school after going through the CCPS) is worth it though. The move won't affect their service a jot. They'll still be the worst ISP in town, churning away with their government-esque blundering. They'll still provide the most over-priced, under supported internet in the state.

Hagen was quoted that the HD signal pixelation and distorted sound will continue to provide hours of amusement as subscribers try to figure out what is going on during their favorite TV programs. Hagen suggested we unplug and reboot her at the start of every day and install a really BIG antenna so we can get local channels in the future.

"Crumcast will continue to provide the same substandard of disservice to its customers", she gloated. " Please note" she continued, "the menu choices have changed, press one to disconnect, two to sit on hold for a day, three if you speak Chinese and four just for fun. To cancel your service, we will be happy to rip out all your home cable runs at your convenience."

As far as I'm concerned Comcast is the WORST at customer service. They just don't care, but then why should they when they are a monopoly. I hope they go the way of Montgomery Wards. They had the same attitude.

This is not a good move for Collier, Glades, Hendry and Charlotte counties. All of these counties are losing jobs. Based on the article, there will be at least 350 people that will be unemployed between all the counties. If you think the service is bad now, just wait it will get worse. Also, if they own their building (in Collier) why would you rent in Lee. Tell me how this is cost efficient.

Comcast needs competition. Our politicians better start doing their jobs and kill the cable monopolies.

Were will be able to pay in person? If I have to mail the payment, than I WILL deduct the cost of the stamp. These companies are being paid to provide a service and I expect them to provide a quality service!

Barb Hagen doesn't even live in Collier or Lee county, she lives in Sarasota and runs the operations down here by e-mail and phone.

The system here is the worst one in all of Comcasts holdings for customer service and outages.

I like Blue's name for this operation; Crumcast. It fits this operation well.

I never thought I would say this but I wish we had Time Warner/Road Runner back. At least the internet connection did not fail once a day. I too have experienced the call center giving me instructions on unplugging and plugging in wires to get it to work properly.

By the way sprinkling magic pixie dust on the router does not work, I have tried that. Maybe I need to click my heels when I do that.

Would not hurt my feelings at all if these people would just leave all together.

The problem with call centers is they have several canned answers that they can give you. when you call, you get some sap fresh from how to use a telephone school sitting in a room the size of a basketball court. The only people who know what they're doing at Comcast are usually the watch supervisors in their net-ops centers, and eve then their knowledge is suspect. I'm an IT Technician, and when I'm working with clients that use Comcast's "commercial" connections, I expect to reach a call center with somebody whom knows what the hell is going on with their own network. my favorite thing to do is tell them that I wouldn't be calling them if I hadn't already made sure the problem wasn't my equipment and to connect me to their supervisor. Works like a charm, because every so often, I'll catch one of their brighter bulbs and they'll be able to help to a greater or lesser degree.

My suggestion to you guys is that when you do have problems with your connection is to turn off your comcast box, your computer and your wireless router if you've got one, and then turn it all back on in the following order:

1: Comcast box
2: Wireless Router (if you've got one)
3: Computers

If that doesn't fix it, tell the morons at Comcast you've already tried that and you want to speak to their supervisor.

It's not Comcastic, its schtuffcastic!

I literally have been fighting with comcast for one entire year due to them overbilling me for my triple play deal. It started with my first $300 bill for this triple play DEAL! I call....wait....talk to someone for an hour every month when my next $300 bill comes in.......only to get a shut off notice in the mail next. These guys are terrible.....really.

Spetsnaz: Thanks for the tips. I have had similar "success" using this approach most of the time. Recently there was a major problem with the feed from CBS' HD OR Crumcast's transmission. There was excessive pixelation and an audio distortion which made any viewing impossible. I worked both ends and soon there was a resolution. My favorite frustration is when the VOD isn't available because there is problem with Crumcast and not enough bandwidth available at a particular time.

I have demanded credits and gotten them when I am unable to use the ISP or TV programing. I don't know if they will continue to be fairly reasonable about this in the future.

I do miss TimeWarner. They were pleasant on the phone and seldom had connectivity issues.

I guess this is why our bills are going up again.
