Cross country: Community School girls lead several from area ranked by FlRunners.com

The Community School of Naples girls cross country team, the defending state champions, have been ranked No. 1 in Class 1A in the FlRunners.com preseason rankings released Sunday.

The Seahawks did not lose a runner from the team that won the school's first state team title in the fall. CSN's Kathryn Fluehr is ranked fourth in the state, followed by teammates Chandler Burfield (10th), Vivian Grimes (11th), Erika Fluehr (12th) and Taylor Burfield (23rd). St. John Neumann's Victoria McCaffrey is ranked ninth.

In Class 2A, Immokalee's Joane Pierre is ranked No. 1 in the state. Naples High's Aimee Osceola is 15th. Naples High is ranked eighth in the team standings, with Estero 12th and Immokalee 15th.

In Class 3A, Lely's Amber Imm is ranked sixth, and Cypress Lake's Kaitlyn Martin is 26th. In the team rankings, Cypress Lake is 14th and Barron Collier is 19th.

On the boys side, in Class 1A, Community School is ranked No. 7 despite the loss of top runner Kyle Carufe, and St. John Neumann is No. 11. SJN's Taylor Peliska is ranked ninth.

In Class 2A, Naples High is ranked second, with Jeff Marvel ninth and Max Shumake 15th individually. Estero is seventh, led by No. 2 Erick Montoya. Immokalee is eighth, with Gorman Moran 12th.

In Class 3A, Cypress Lake's Trent Craig is 10th and Barron Collier's Brian Alexander is 15th.

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
