Driver's license service coming to Bonita City Hall

— Starting Tuesday, resident of South Lee and North Collier counties will no longer have to trek to Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres or Naples to get their driver's licenses.

On the second Tuesday of every month, Bonita Springs City Hall will play host to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles’ Mobile Licensing Unit, which issues driver's licenses and provides other services.

The FLOW — Florida Licensing on Wheels — will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday at 9101 Bonita Beach Road.

“It seemed like a convenience for the residents, especially consider the cost of gas,” said Dianne Lynn, Bonita clerk-treasurer. “Apparently, there aren’t many locations in the area.”

The mobile licensing unit can convert out-of-state driver's licenses and ID cards to Florida, provide original Florida driver's licenses and learner’s permits, renew Florida driver's licenses and ID cards, change addresses, change names, replace lost or stolen driver's licenses and ID cards and reinstate driver's licenses.

The only service the FLOW doesn’t offer is written or road testing.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has 85 permanent offices statewide including Cape Coral, Lehigh Acres and Naples, and an addition five FLOWs run on a schedule between locations every month.

“They go where they are needed or requested,” said Ann Nucatola, highway safety department press secretary. “As long as we have customers out that way, we will be there.”

In addition to regularly scheduled stops, FLOWs will go to retirement communities and other locations where people have difficulty reaching a permanent office, and the units will attend large community events as well.

On Tuesday, the mobile unit will be set up just inside the front doors of Bonita Springs City Hall.
