— Car horns honked.

Overhead, an airplane flew.

And at the intersection of Airport-Pulling and Pine Ridge roads, 12-year-old Andrea Pilapis hung out the passenger window of a mini-van and snapped photos with her pink cell phone camera.

“Oh my God, it’s an elephant,” Andrea said.

Indeed it was an elephant, and a 10,000-pounder at that.

For weeks, Collier sheriff’s candidate Vinny Angiolillo promised he would pull off “the biggest Republican political event in history” Monday — a “spectacular” stunt he swore would “make national news.”

He even went so far as to e-mail Vice President Dick Cheney, Gov. Charlie Crist and Bill O’Reilly of Fox News to let them in on the plan.

Rumors about what, exactly, Angiolillo was planning swirled last week, including rumors that he was planning a parade or even jumping out of an airplane.

Turns out, when Angiolillo says “big” he means five-ton big.

Around 7:45 a.m., a crowd started gathering at the intersections of Pine Ridge and Airport-Pulling roads, where the stunt was scheduled to occur. Fifteen minutes later, word came down that Angiolillo was riding a large African elephant down the sidewalk along Airport-Pulling Road.

“I’ve been planning this for 15 years,” Angiolillo said. “I’m a big guy. This is a big animal. We’ve got big problems, but I’ve got big solutions to them.”

Angiolillo said he paid $4,000 to bring the 34-year-old elephant, named Makia, down from Sarasota. He also had a plane circling overhead with a “Vinny for Sheriff” sign.

“I’m sitting on top of the Republican Party,” Angiolillo said. “I am the Republican Party.”

The elephant’s owner, Jorge Barreda, 58, said he owns four elephants, which he brings to circuses, fairs, birthday parties and other events around the country.

Makia eats five bales of hay every day.

Barreda, who isn’t an Angiolillo supporter, said Angiolillo contacted him through his agent.

“We’re neutral, but the elephant stands for what we stand for, the Republican,” Barreda said.

Angiolillo’s son followed behind the elephant in a truck cleaning up the animal’s mess.

Supporters of one of Angiolillo’s rivals for sheriff, former Collier Undersheriff Kevin Rambosk, also gathered at the intersection with Rambosk signs. Angiolillo said they were “rude” and were trying to steal his thunder.

“Kevin doesn’t need to resort to that kind of thing,” Rambosk supporter Michelle Sova said. “He stands on his experience and his background.”

After waving at the crowd for about a half hour while his supporters yelled “Vinny for sheriff,” Angiolillo rode Makia west along the sidewalk beside Pine Ridge Road and then north to his business on Corporation Boulevard.

Dozens of drivers and business owners pulled out their cell phone cameras and snapped photos as Angiolillo passed.

Fran Porcelli stood by the sidewalk with her 1-year-old granddaughter, Lilliana.

“My daughter-in-law was going to my house to drop (Lilliana) off. She said, mom, there’s an elephant walking down Airport Road,” Porcelli said. “We got in the car and came to see the elephant.”

For Lilliana, an elephant lover, it was a day to remember.

For Makia, it was a day she’ll never forget.

One more instance of this man's bad judgments as he continues to act like a clown rather than a leader. I think Vinny is just using this campaign as a PR gig to get his limo business more attention and the NDN just eats it up.

NOW I'm going to vote for him. Too bad the other candidates weren't as politically savvy as "Vinny." He's obviously the best man for the job.

OK...let me get this straight now that Commissioner Coletta is the subject of a complaint sent to the Elections Divion in Tallahassee. The Naples Daily News reporter, Ilene Stackel contacts him about the complaint before she writes the story and posts it on the NDN website on Wednesday, August 20th night. Coletta states that he cought the violation which was accepting too much Campaign Contributions from one person, a clear violation. He further said that he wrote a letter to the Elections Office advising them about it. The letter, is dated August 21, 2008 which is the day after the story was posted by NDN. That means that when he told the reporter that he sent a letter, there was no letter at the time. In his letter which is part of the Campaign Treasurer's Report F3, Coletta wrote that he refunded the $250.00 over contributed which he admitts to accepting, to the contributor on August 7, 2008. The refund check written by Coletta is dated 7/7/08. The Contribution Refund Report he submitted with the letter states that he discovered the excess contribution on 08/11/08 and he refunded the money to the campaing contributor on 08/11/08 which would be the same day he said to have discovered it on the report which contradicts what he stated in the letter. On the Contribution Refund Report Coletta stated that he refunded $150.00 total. This also contradicts the letter. According to the complaint the excessive contribution was $250.00, if he only returned $150.00 of it then he still has $100.00 of the violation money and that further extends his violation. The letters and reports which are evidence of fraud are signed and attested to by him, therefore he has committed purgery. Oh, it gets better, there were also two other same type violations, one was from the Mayor of Everglades City's wife, and the other from a big wig corporation in New York. He has two seperate letters each for the additional violation but he failed to submitt the Campaign Contribution Refunds for each violation so there is no official record showing that the monies were refunded to the contributors, and when.

Well, here are some questions to ponder;

1) Is the NDN Reporter, Stackel going to follow-up with the conflicts to her story and advise the public the truth?

2) Why does the NDN editorial Board insist in Endorsing, and now recomending Coletta in the Primary Election?

Naples Daily News staff, if you decide to take this message away so that no-one reads it, at least make sure that you forward a copy to the reporter Satckel, and the Editorial Board so they know that they are about to receive egg on their faces from Coletta.
Thank You.

Wonder if this was an intentional insite into the future IF he became sheriff.
That he was was going to treat the agency as if he was the ringleader of a circus.

Quite the showman. LOL

What an idea!! Rather than making fun of him, everyone needs to give him credit for such an imagination. I think it was a great idea, and sorry that I missed it Vinny!

W also provided us with a great republican feat, a disappearing act, have you noticed how all the W stickers and for that matter all the republican bumper stickers have vanished off of all the republican's cars in Naples. Can't blame them though, I wouldn't want to put one on my car and show the world what a fool I was.

What an idiot! Parked in the turn lane on Pine Ridge. Right, we want a Sheriff who picks and chooses which laws to enforce. Take your beef elsewhere.

Hey #10 - that election was four years ago. Remember you lost. Besides I have not seen any Kerry/Edwards stickers around in a while either. How embarrassing was that?

If this guy is sheriff, he'll have to lose about 100 lbs. to be any kind of example to his deputies.
Shame on him.....
And it's good he's a Republican, no mule could carry all that blubber ;-)

Guys Vinny is sending a strong message here...

Since he is big on cutting-back on expensses, not high on enforcement, If elected Sheriff the Republican Affiliated Deputies will ride Elephants and the Democrats will ride Donkeys as patrol vehicles. I wonder what will the other party affilates use....skateboards maybe? LOL

Re #5...stay on the subject! You have already posted this exact same comment on another blog but that time it was on the subject. This time it is NOT. Post it under letters to the editor. This is about VINNY!

I love elephants. Such smart sensitive creatures. They can't vote, which is probably a good thing for Vinny.

And I quote from Ryan's article above:

"who along with the CCSO's Kevin Rambosk"

Ummm, did Rambosk go back to being employed by the CCSO? Come on Ryan, don't be so one-sided because you have the possibility of a new job. The ex undersheriff last time I checked was UNEMPLOYED because he had to resign or face federal law violations.

Vinny does stuff like this (and the tuxedo w/shorts bit) to get free advertising since his campaign funds are puny compared to Kevin and Vic.

#25 Posted by pauls on August 25, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)

If there was any doubt that the incumbent and his followers have no class, no dignity, this event was it. They paraded around in front of Vinny and behind him in a pathetic display, an effort to steal Vinny's thunder. Kevin and his bunch must be very very insecure. It's obvious they are scared.

Ortino for sheriff. Positive change we need now!
Ortino for sheriff.

Mother and Toes:
The subject is Vinny and an Elephant. We understand some of you want Ortino as the next sheriff, but do you think that someone will really make a decision based on your comments on this blog about Vinny? I respect our differences, but I am not using this story as a way to promote my candidate...h'mmm now just wait a minute, perhaps I will just do this anyway as Tuesday is the BIG DAY!!!
Yep, I HAVE just now decided who would be a great leader for any of the pending elections.

I am endorsing the elephant. Elephants have a great memory, are quiet and quite compassionate. They have a distinct presence in any room!

Ellie Phant for President, Congress, Sheriff etc. Go Ellie.
She promises that she will be a uniting force and will offer any assistanceship (VEEP spot, etc.) to the Donkey from Bad Ass Coffee! Bipartisan and perky...what a great candidate. Slogan: Caffeine in every Pot.

Vole: According to Webster's Dictionary it is defined as;

"Any of various small rodents with a stout body and short tail."

Elephants hate rodents and they don't forget them either!

After tomorrow you may have to shave and trim that hair buddy.

#37 Posted by straighttalker on August 25, 2008 at 10:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What an ignoranus! Elephants are intellectually superior to many humans, this one in particular apparently.

Tyke, facing human tormentors one last time, went on a rampage in Hawaii some years ago and was shot to death. The photographer wrote to me: "Not one day goes by that I don't think of that poor elephant. At the end, she could only lift herself on her front feet and swing her trunk, pathetically trying to ward off the bullets. It was the sickest thing I've ever seen and I've been shooting news for over 20 years."

In a letter to the editor of the St. Pete Times, a writer lamented: "Tyke, it seems, went berserk and killed her trainer, as well as injuring a number of others. How pathetic the blood from her multiple gunshot wounds running into her eyes, staining her pretty pink head ribbon and running down her legs all over her fuchsia leg restraints. Perhaps Tyke, in a moment of sanity, remembered her wild heritage and the dignity of freedom which is the right of every living creature. Perhaps man, the REAL king of the jungle, went berserk years ago when he began caging magnificent wild animals, dressing them in silly hats and ribbons, making them do foolish tricks in exchange for food. Tyke's lucky. She's dead."

cleanup I would like to remind U this is the good ole U.S.A, where campaigning can be fun, intense, and downright goofy in Vinnie's case.

So when there's a parade in town....PEOPLE in Naples watch and participate.

There's nothing unethical about any of Rambosk campaign team's actions in Vinnie's impromptu parade, and it nice of Vinnie to let them in to share the elephant love.

Where'd he get the elephant?

This could have been dangerous if you really think about it.

Big elephant...big guy...big promises he can't keep.

What an ignoranus! Elephants are intellectually superior to many humans, this one in particular apparently.

Tyke, dressed in a silly costume, went on a rampage in Hawaii some years ago and was shot to death. The photographer wrote to me: "Not one day goes by that I don't think of that poor elephant. Hmmm, I am not a detective or anything, but I can smell a clue when I see one. I received a copy of Victor's open letter to the CCSO, as well as his follow up letter. And just chuckled and shook my head that he incorrectly used "should of" rather than the grammatically correct "should have" in the letter? And wow, what a coincidence that Toesmom used the same incorrect grammar in her posting #56 on this blog. Seems Toesmom is writing Vic's letters for him. It would benefit him to at least recruit a high school graduate to proofread his county wide distributed correspondence

I would've loved standing by that elephant. Is that an African Bull? huge. One of the most dangerous animals there are. But I think it was smiling as it is very funny when you stop and think about the whole scene out on airport, and if you can imagine the cell phone blimp on top as the Collier County Sheriff -hilarious.
The elephant was definitely in charge. Forget the permit.

Mrs. Tony Lauer are you stalking the Rambosk people. How did you get video of them "huddling"?

Do you think it's possible the Rambosk people were at the intersection to wave their signs since it is the busiest intersection in the county? Why was it rude for them to be on a street corner waving signs?

Because your candidate can't get supporters out like that, I guess he's not rude. I heard he enlisted a bunch of young Republican teen agers to hold sings for him at poling places because he can't get enough committed volunteers.

Young Republicans, thanks for your enthusiasm in getting involved in the political process. Be careful though, some of the Vic supporters have admitted to watching child pornography.

I do love that Vinny guy. He's a nut but he's keeps it interesting.

CommonCause: guess you have never multitasked. Easy to post while working on projects which compute in the background while monitoring other media and keeping up with correspondence.
That's all with one hand and half of my brain....the other half does the creative stuff which thinks up the projects which pay all the bills. LOL.

BTW, Blue Tongued Voles are highly endangered and fond of other creatures, especially elephants.

I find K2of3 comments interesting in that Mr. Ortino's supporters purposely did not wave signs during Mr. Angilillo's event this morning. It has nothing to do with how many supporters one has but respect for a fellow candidate. I am very concerned about the comments being posted here as it relates to fellow human beings. I sure hope none of those posting comments like that are deputies or employed by the sheriff's office, but we all know some are which is too sad. They shouldn't be commenting like that on a public blog (or in private either) saying things they are. It really shows how much lack of concern for human beings as a whole they have. As for the person who said that Mr. Ortino's supporters were waving signs for that other candidate, that is not true and you know it. I applaud Mr. Angilillo for his creativity. Sure beats renting a trolley.

Ryu, thanks for the defense. You are OK too. Beetlejuice is good crazy and funny, too. So is mothernature when she gets talking about hurricane parties.

It will soon be over (the primary) and we can all relax until the BIG event in November.
Until the conventions are over, I am not watching ANY cable news. The Weather Channel and History Channels (or similar programing) will be on, but nothing in Denver or Minnesota.

Just watched Vinny video, it was funny. Good to laugh.

BTV, get ready...for GUSTAV party.

Vinny,

At least you kept it entertaining, without seeking contributions.

This can be a new reality T V show.

Hope to see your name in the next political race just to keep it interesting.

As Bob Hope would say, thanks for the memories.

Sheriff Rambosk, you got our votes, now make good on your promises.

Clean house as needed and regain the positive image of CCSO.

Good luck

Georgeglass...elephants are actually quite smart...they were smart enough to stampede after a circus. They are very social animals, and if they are confined for too long...WATCH out!

For Lilliana, an elephant lover, it was a day to remember. For Makka, it was a day she’ll never forget.

Editorializing again Ryan?

Toesmom, no response on if you are the letter writer?

She's not the letter writer.
That's a very common mistake made by many people.

Hey all, read this article out of the News Press. Sheriff Scott doesn't mess around. Only a little more than a month to complete an IA and the deputies reported the other deputy for the false arrest. I wonder how long this same investigation would take elsewhere and for the information to be hidden, I mean, given out freely to the media?

Whoops, sorry Vinny, I meant to post this on a different blog. Please forgive me?

Yuck... !!! Sure... we all need a Sheriff that is 200 lbs overweight! The only thing moving on this turkey is his mouth. What a disgrace!! How can anyone in the Sheriff's department have any respect for a boss that cannot even pass an officer physical? Can he even touch his toes with that beer belly in front of him? My image of a Sheriff is someone I can respect... and it is not Vinny !

Wonder if he got a permit for that?

#79 Posted by projectfusion on August 25, 2008 at 6:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Umm, not really mothernature. Not by educated people anyway. Although, in Toesmom's defense, her error was only on a blog. His was on a letter that was widely distributed via an email list, and then passed around 10 times over from there. You would think that would be cause to double check your work.....

#80 Posted by carlyc on August 25, 2008 at 6:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Commoncause post #49. No doubt that too few have too much time. Both sides (Ortino and Rambosk) have numerous postings by a few under several different names. I know that my mind was made up months ago (Rambosk for Sheriff) regarding my vote and neither side has swayed me. But, I think that you and I will agree that Aug 26 is tommorrow and it will all be over then. I have grwon weary of reading the mudslinging.

I don't support Vinny, but I must admit this "stunt" (vinny's words not mine) was a welcome relief to all the hatred and mudslinging back and forth by a few.

Rambosk for Sheriff.

ryu...please don't take it personally, but I live on a big lake that wants to infringe on my back doors of my home in about two feet....two feet. So I'm busy thinking about how many sand bags I could use to keep the water out. Fun stuff.

Maybe Vinnie will lend me his elephant to me to get to work and the grocery store from my house in this rainy weather.

I still wuv ryu......if you could STOP the rain, I'd wuv U even more. :-)

Can you people get over it already? Is it so bad for someone to have a sense of humor? And attacking someone's weight is just disgraceful! Who are any of you to talk about somebody in such a manner? Attacking someone's weight just shows me that you don't have anything better to do with your day. All of you need to get over yourselves and grow up!

#84 Posted by Mrsmendo on August 25, 2008 at 7:36 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Carlyc,
I challenge you to read many textbooks (elementary through college, many newspapers, many thesis, etc. and see how many errors you find? What about job applications? I know one person who has TWO master's degrees who incorrectly spelled the name of a professor twice. Did I mention he was also one of the person's former employers ... three times? (Worked with him in between getting degrees). And this was on her job application!!!! So, yes, people make errors. And this can be the result when someone attempts to fix bad grammar.

We had 3.5 inches in the rain gauge from today alone.

mothernature, think we need to plan a heck of a party for Gustav. Hear that Beetle wants a fish fry. Has 3 fish on hand as we blog.

Don't forget to vote, people! The trash talking on here is just that, a lot of trash from people who believe the ends justify the means. Spreading watercooler gossip and innuendo is a favorite tactic, especially when anonymous.

Look at the candidates. Talk to people in the community. Talk to a deputy. Make up your own minds.

BTV CONGRAT'S YOU ARE THE 100TH POST.

Should I get into the winning prize and 4 hour disclaimer?

#89 Posted by BIGMAC on August 25, 2008 at 10:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Truthhurtz - "Talk to a deputy" thats funny! I talk they don't say anything back.
My example - SO Helicopter flying around like crazy with the spot lights going around like a disco and cops running all around at 2am in my neighborhood, I call to see if I need to hide in the closet or whatever. All I got was basically it was na ya business. Not a thing in the paper next day or anything???

Oh well I'm sure they have their reasons, whatever.

But anyways, Hats off to all the canidiates for running period. It takes MAJOR guts to actually put yourself in a political circus ring. Wish there were more people out there willing to take that chance.

#90 Posted by camelopardalis on August 25, 2008 at 10:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

TruthHurtz: Dang, man, my feelings are hurtz now. Would you rather I spread watercolor paintings? They run in the rain, you know.

Seriously, why make a statement which is all inclusive? I don't much like that innuendo. If someone is in your window, be sure and call and report it. (Groucho Marx didn't say this, did he? I am sure he could have.)

Naw, not drinking out of the rain gauge, but if someone was truly influenced by this or any blog regarding how to cast their votes for any office, I would really worry about them.

Thanks BIGMAC, I am not sure I want to know the prize. Some say I do take the cake. As long as it is devil's food or is it angel food cake???, I don't mind. Go for the 4 hour disclaimer, however, had a cup of coffee a bit late and will need something natural to help me doze.

Or maybe I should have said a wanna be pig riding an elephant...He fits the part physically...But definitely lacks in the education and experience department anyone who votes for this man is just as ignorant and maybe they should get a free ride on the first elephant out of collier county.

I read the article this morning with great interest and then ran out and bought a case of Tylenol for the elephant.

His back must be killing him.

#98 Posted by Chevelle396 on August 26, 2008 at 11:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Chevelle, I can't imagine how they brought the elephant into Naples either.

It had to be difficult.

Probably not the safest bet for the elephant's health.

Although, he looks happy and healthy, with a dip in his back for some reason.

BTW Rambosk will win so what's the point of this elephant anyway?

Repubby dummy showing off in a non-partisan race I guess.
