Q: Any idea what happened to the night club that was supposed to open in the shopping center where the La-Z-Boy store is in Bonita Springs on U.S. 41? I believe it was called Ultra, never heard anything about the grand opening.
— Barb Hy
A: Ultra Naples opened on New Year’s Eve.
It’s easy to tell why you couldn’t tell it was opened, Barbara, as the place is marketed as an exclusive club with an upscale setting and a strict dress code, boasting that it is bringing Miami to Naples.
Ultra is only open from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Owner Tiffany Alekov said the club is trying to expand to Wednesdays through Saturdays.
Apparently, the club offers Friday Night Meltdown, which boasts DJ 007 and The Sexiest Crowd in Southwest Florida, according to the club’s promotion.
The club is expanding its hours for Labor Day weekend, hosting a 10 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday party called DJs and PJs, where people wearing their pajamas get in for free. There’s a PJs contest where $500 in prizes will be given away.
One last quick thing, Barbara, although close to the border, Ultra is actually in unincorporated Collier County. You can find out all about the club at www.ultranaples.com.
Q: If you look at a map on a GPS, Google or even weather maps shown on TV, there is a place called Council at approximately the northern intersection of Old 41 Road and U.S. 41 in Bonita. What is Council?
Also, land is being cleared on the east side of Old 41 Road just north of the Bonita Springs Charter School, what is going on there?
— Wes, Bonita Springs
A: Here is the answer to your second question, Wes, about the land being cleared: That property is the future home of Villages of Bonita, which has been approved for 396 multi-family dwelling units, 50,000 square feet of commercial space and 195,000 square feet of business park on its 85 acres.
Your first question, Wes, is a bit more complicated.
Google, Yahoo, Mapquest, the Weather Channel and MSN all have Council on their maps near that intersection, so it’s difficult to call it a mistake, unless they all plagiarized from each other.
With the exception of Mapquest, all the others put Council north of Strike Lane and south of Quality Road, which is a church and vacant land on the east side of Old 41 Road and a shopping center on the west side of the road. Nothing included in these locations could be Council.
This location is near the Bonita Springs office of the Lee County Supervisor of Elections and the Bonita Springs Area Chamber of Commerce, so either of those could be it.
Mapquest, unlike the other maps, puts Council a little further south on Old 41 Road on the west side of the road, sort of near the Lee County Tax Collector’s Office, so that could be it, too.
I spoke with Bonita Springs Mayor Ben Nelson, who has lived in this area just about as long as anybody, and Charlie Strader, president of the Bonita Springs Historical Society, and we couldn’t come up with anything that could be called Council in that area. It definitely isn’t the name of an old town or settlement.
In the city, there are two high profile councils: the Bonita Springs City Council and the Literacy Council of Bonita Springs. The City Council meets near the intersection of Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41, and the Literacy Council meets on Old 41 Road, although much further south than the Council on these maps.

How do they manage to stay open until 4:00?

Why not? It gives time for most to sober up. They stop serving at 2, but people keep going. It's a good time. And how Barb Hy never heard about is beyond me. I have heard it advertised on more than one radio station.

"boasting that it is bringing Miami to Naples"
I know I'm taking this slightly out of context here, however, I think that it needs saying. Certain things about Miami are nice, the shopping, the restaurants, the entertainment and that's about all I can think of... the rest of it we have enough of and can stay over in Miami.

i've been here for awhile and have seen old original maps of Southwest Florida. most of the names on these maps were given by the Government Surveyor's as they mapped the area...this was back in 1877 era...Council, i think i read was a place where the Army had council with the indian tribe of the area to get safe passage for the Land Surveyor's crew to continue mapping out Lee &(Bonita) and Collier counties. the original Survey Maps are in Tallahassee and are online so someone can research this.
