Hideout Golf Club's Gene Fieger tied for fourth in the 30th annual South Florida PGA Section Championship on Thursday at Breakers West in West Palm Beach.
Fieger finished with a 54-hole total of 210, three shots behind Alan Morin of Royal Palm Beach. Morin, 35, had four birdies on the back nine to shoot a 68 and win by a stroke over Nick Ayala of Delray Beach. Morin also won the title in 2002.
“I hit a lot of good putts Wednesday that just didn’t go in,” Morin said, “and today they did. I hit the ball pretty well all three days and just tried to stay patient because I knew the putts would eventually start to fall again…they always do.”
Calusa Pines' Boomer Erick shot a final-round 73 and tied for 10th at 212. John Lee of Imperial tied for 11th with a 214, and John Calabria of Fiddler's Creek tied for 13th at 215. Peter Baxter of Eastwood tied for 20th at 217.
The victory also likely clinched SFPGA Player of the Year honors for Morin and an exemption into the Honda Classic in March. He was the only club professional to make the cut at the Honda this year after following a similar path to the first tee.
