Sea turtle nesting numbers out this week show that Tropical Storm Fay washed out about a third of the nests on Collier County's monitored beaches.

Fay destroyed 165, or about 36 percent, of the 455 nests left unhatched on beaches from Barefoot Beach in North Naples to Kice Island and Cape Romano, where Fay came ashore south of Marco Island, according to county figures.

This year's turtle nesting season has been an active one so far, with 691 nests laid on Collier County's shoreline compared to 447 nests last year, figures show.

Nests counts released Wednesday show that Fay washed out 4 nests at Barefoot Beach, 14 at Vanderbilt Beach, 32 on city of Naples beaches, 39 on Keewaydin Island, 11 at Sea Oat and Coconut islands, 10 on Marco Island and 55 at Kice Island and Cape Romano.

I don't understand these turtle people. They run around Collier County beaches in boats and four wheelers counting turtle nests and plotting them with GPS units. They camp out at night and 'assist' the turtle hatchings, they pass laws to turn off lights, yet when a storm is forecast ten days in advance, nothing is done to protect nesting sites.

I walk the beaches all the time and witnessed nests that suffered some erosion from the waves. How difficult would it be to build something like a sand bag bunker around a turtle nest?

Teach them to lay their eggs on OUR beaches. Serves em right!
