Davis Boulevard crash critically injures Naples woman

Trooper Jeff Benoit, with the Florida Highway Patrol, receives information about the condition of a passenger that was transported to the hospital after an accident at the corner of Davis Boulevard and Shadowlawn Drive on Friday in Naples. According to Benoit and witnesses on scene, the driver of a 2006 red Dodge Caravan turned north through a red arrow onto Shadowlawn from eastbound Davis Boulevard. The van was hit on the passenger side by a 2002 Chevy truck that was heading west on Davis. The impact caused the van to spin around, hit a dark gray Acura Integra. A female passenger from the van is in critical, but stable condition at Lee Memorial hospital and the driver from the Integra was transported with minor injuries.

— An 81-year-old Naples woman is in critical condition after a three-vehicle crash Friday morning on Davis Boulevard in East Naples.

A 2006 Dodge Caravan minivan driven by Arthur J. Vallez, 83, of Naples was traveling east on Davis before turning left at the intersection of Shadowlawn Drive at 11:23 a.m. into the path of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup traveling westbound on Davis. The pickup, driven by Chris E. Darby, 46, of Naples, struck the minivan's right side. Another westbound vehicle on Davis, a 1996 Acura Integra driven by Tiffany M. Davies, 21, of Naples, then struck the minivan's left front fender in the intersection, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

Vallez was charged with turning left against a red arrow traffic signal in front of approaching traffic at the intersection.

An elderly female passenger, Robah J. Vallez, was not wearing a seatbelt and was critically injured in the crash, the FHP reports. She was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital, where she remained in critical condition Friday night.

Davies received minor injuries in the crash and was transported to Physicians Regional Medical Center on Collier Boulevard. The other two drivers received minor injuries, but were not taken to a hospital.

All three vehicles were towed from the scene.

I need a FAA check ride every 6 months in order to fly passengers as a Captain, and age has nothing to do with it. All Captains need to do this. I think after a given age, that all drivers of motor vehicles need to be tested on the rules of the road, and given a driving test. As one grows older, your reaction time slows down, and vision changes as well. We have a lot of elderly drivers in SW FL. It's not about politics AARP, it's about safety. This driver made a turn right into oncoming traffic, and in doing so, injures his wife badly. It's about safety people.

Cit10, you are right, but the people who govern are more concerned about re-election than safety.

Besides, the day we test for reaction time and peripheral vision on driving tests will eliminate young and old from the roads, making us all safer.

I am sad about this tragedy, but it was avoidable.

I do believe this is Jerry Valez and his wife, both very well knnown artists. Jerry's work is displayed at The Cove in and other places, I hope she will be okay.

You may be right that it is Jerry Vallez. Funny how the NDN's readers actually dug up more news than the NDN itself.

I agree with you Cit10driver but you know that AARP would fight this tooth and nail if this was proposed. And our legislators would cave in to their pressure.

Let's let JYD provide us with the details. Seems like he's a better reporter than the NDN people, huh?

Anyone, I repeat ANYONE, can fill out paperwork at any Driver's License office, anonymously I might add, to have someone reveluated for driving. The stated will require that person to come in and take a driving test or be suspended. I did this on my own grandfather becuase I did not want to see him get hurt or hurt someone else. He actually took it very well.

I have something to say. My names Tiffany, I was the one driving the black Integra. I believe he should loose his license. I understand he's well known artist but what he did was wrong. This article does no justice. It doesnt say that he didnt know that he was on davis, he thought he was on airport, and that he wasnt even in the turning lane when he made the turn he was in the straight lane. My life has been flip turned upside down because of this accident. I was on my way to work, not even a mile away from my job. My car is totalled. I will have problems the rest of my life with my back and neck. I now have no income because I cant do my job without hurting myself more. He does not deserve his license. His wife wasnt wearing a seatbelt, she was hurt because of his mistake. I wish her well, and I hope she pulls through. He was not injured at all, but he did hurt others.
