The Florida Gulf Coast University men's basketball team will open its regular season at defending champion Kansas, the Daily News has learned through a public records request.
FGCU will play in Allen Fieldhouse on ESPNU on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.
The game is part of the O'Reilly Auto Parts College Basketball Experience Classic, which will also feature Washington and Florida, with Syracuse being reported as a fourth major conference team. The four host teams will advance to Kansas City for the semifinals and finals Nov. 24-25. There are eight teams from smaller conferences making up the remainder of the field.
The remaining eight teams will play a round robin at campus sites. FGCU already has listed it will be one of the hosts for that portion, from Nov. 24-26.
FGCU athletic director Carl McAloose and men's basketball coach Dave Balza said they could not confirm the game because the tournament pairings have not been released by Gazelle Group, which owns the event. An e-mail and phone message to the Gazelle Group contact was not returned Friday.
Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri and UCLA were the four major teams for last season's tournament, with UCLA topping Michigan State for the title.
