— Local Republicans called Sen. John McCain’s vice president choice “brilliant.”

Staffing the Collier County Republican Party’s victory office on Friday, two soldiers said they were delighted with the idea of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin serving as the next vice president.

Retired Infantry Col. Charlie Sues said he believes Palin is a “tough lady and tough conservative.”

“We think it was a brilliant move. She’s a great person,” Sues said, noting with pleasure that Palin is also pro-life.

U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Craig Layton was similarly delighted.

“It is an absolutely brilliant move, not only strategically, but the right choice as well,” he said, noting that he’s followed “bits and pieces” of Palin’s career. “It is the right choice. I’m very, very proud that he made that selection.”

He said McCain’s choice shows what kind of president he will be.

Collier County GOP Chairwoman Carla Dean released a statement, which said: “It is a brilliant choice. Gov. Palin is bright, articulate and principled. She will bring a new energy to the campaign. Her speech this afternoon showed the depth of her knowledge and understanding of what this country needs — as she is a known reformer from the state of Alaska.”

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer said: “Republicans across the state join me in congratulating Governor Palin, who will join Sen. John McCain as our party’s vice presidential nominee. The historic McCain-Palin ticket will offer common sense solutions and principled leadership based on a deep-rooted belief in putting country first.”

Uhhh...is it just me or has anyone else here never heard of her?

#1 Posted by Analytical_Skeptic on August 29, 2008 at 9:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If your a woman, isn't this an insult to your intelligence?

Bringing this woman out of left field is obviously an attempt to try to get the Hillary voters.

But I guess if you have no business acumen, or have no real experience but a lot of BIG ideas, this is what you resort to.

This election gets more BIZARRE every day.
;-)

All Republican officials quoted in this story later admitted that like the rest of America, none of them had ever heard of her until 10 A.M. this morning.

#3 Posted by swfljim on August 29, 2008 at 9:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Ok so if you had not heard of her, do your homework now. I have.
Opti, he could not have picked one of the good old boys, that would have been the Obama/Biden/Clinton fiasco.

But when I found out she liked to hunt and fish and was a life member in the NRA I decided to tell you retarded liberals to bite me.
WOW she believes in the constitution of the United Stated of America. I know you liberals have a problem with this.

Obama couldn't figure out that he needed a woman on his ticket also. Big score for McCain. So bad for Obama.

#6 Posted by nightranger on August 29, 2008 at 10:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What an absolute doll!
She can count on my vote!

#7 Posted by Naplestango on August 29, 2008 at 10:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

But the Obama campaign calls her a candidate with "the thinnest foreign policy experience in history."
I feel secure that by inauguration day, Sarah will have a better grasp of world affairs than Obama and Biden combined!

#8 Posted by Naplestango on August 29, 2008 at 10:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I am speechless. With all due respect, she is truly a featherweight. And clearly not remotely qualified after a year and a half governorship stint in a state with only 650 thousand people. I would have thought he would pick Hutchinson of Texas who would have been a real candidate.
Yes, a lot of women are insulted, and she won't attract Hillary supporters.

#9 Posted by honeybee on August 29, 2008 at 11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

She's a woman so women will vote for her, really, will they, give women a little credit they will see through this scheme, thinking that women will vote for her because she is a woman is sexist, women make decisions on a higher level than that.

She was a mayor of a town smaller than Marco Island 2 years ago. She would fail a world geography test. Just poor judgment by McCain, his firt big decision and this is the result.

I am a news junkie read many papers, magazines, and watch all different news on TV. Listen to news on the car radio.

Until yesterday I had never heard of Palin. Like most of the country I had to look her up to see who she was. I would guess that a large proportion of the staff at the local Republian Office had to as well.

Her lack of experience raises questions about how prepared she is to potentially succeed to the presidency.

#11 Posted by kneejerk on August 30, 2008 at 8:11 a.m. (Suggest removal)

The McCain campaign is eagerly citing Governor Palin’s appeal to Christian conservatives.

Is he running for president of the Christians or running for president for all of us Americans. Many of us here are wary of the religious groups that mix God and politics.

I have just decided that I can not vote for McCain, one time I had hope for him but he is unrecognizable, first he goes to Falwell's University then changes most of his core beliefs to pander to the religious groups and now this decision, I can't vote for him anymore. he had so many good candidates and this is the one he chose, she is not qualified. I would have been comfortable with Crist, or even Romney but Palin is a lightweight, I probably wouldn't consider her for dog catcher.

Can't you just picture all these Republican loyalists taking a deep breath and practicing their poker faces before vocalizing their support of this pick?

Seriously, there are counties in Florida with more people and problems than this Governor (or is it Governess?) has handled in 2 short years.

#13 Posted by seapointer on August 30, 2008 at 8:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)

NOTICE TO REPUBLICANS:

You have a presidential candidate who has a judgement (or confusion) problem and this is the proof in the pudding. One heartbeat away. Americans are a little smarter than you give them credit for. With your candidate at 72 years old, a vetted, respected experienced choice was what America was looking for. That would have soothed some of the concerns about John McCain and his mortality. But to put a person next in line who is unproven, unknown and with no real experience in the greater issues of the say, you have cemented Obama's call for change away from the Republican party. Put the best face you can on, you are expected to do that, but you won't be able avoid that sinking feeling in the gut, as the media will now spend the most important part of the campaign vetting this person. Any small blip will be a major news item, totally distracting the message from the real issues of the campaign.

I knew of Gov Palin before she was picked. When I heard her name mentioned yesterday before the anouncement I got really excited! When the announcement came, I was on my feet cheering! Gov Palin is a great choice and McCain has sealed my vote!

I'm sure if he would have picked Larry Craig or Mark Foley, they would say 'great choice' also.

It is very refreshing to have Palin on board. Truly a different perspective,

#17 Posted by Bagpiper on August 30, 2008 at 9:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

He sealed his fate to loose.

I was sure he was going to loose, now I am positive.

Sarah Palin has no foriegn policy experience.

If he thinks this will help him with the woman voters, or the Hillary supporters, WRONG!!!

Or maybe he knows for a fact the he will loose and this is all a joke.

Well he married a former "beauty queen" and now he picks a former "beauty queen" for his running mate. I guess we know what he's thinking with.
Give it up dirty old man, Mycane as old, ugly and feeble as you look, she's could almost be your granddaughter.

Who has/needs more experience? Where does it count? Pres. or VP?

Written by Dr. Jack Wheeler

The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit. No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, no balls, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of real substance.

He has no real identity. He is half-white, which he rejects. The rest of him is mostly Arab, which he hides but is disclosed by his non-African Arabic surname and his Arabic first and middle names as a way to triply proclaim his Arabic parentage to people in Kenya . Only a small part of him is African Black from his Luo grandmother, which he pretends he is exclusively.

What he isn't, not a genetic drop of, is 'African-American,' the descendant of enslaved Africans brought to America chained in slave ships. He hasn't a single ancestor who was a slave. Instead, his Arab ancestors were slave owners. Slave-trading was the main Arab business in East Africa for centuries until the British ended it.

Let that sink in: Obama is not the descendant of slaves, he is the descendant of slave owners Thus he makes the perfect Liberal Messiah.

It's something Hillary doesn't understand - how some complete neophyte came out of the blue and stole the Dem nomination from her. Obamamania is beyond politics and reason. It is a true religious cult, whose adherents reject Christianity yet still believe in Original Sin, transferring it from the evil of being human to the evil of being white.

Thus Obama has become the white liberals' Christ, offering absolution from the Sin of Being White. There is no reason or logic behind it, no faults or flaws of his can diminish it, no arguments Hillary could make of any kind can be effective against it. The absurdity of Hypocrisy Clothed In Human Flesh being their Savior is all the more cause for liberals to worship him: Credo quia absurdum, I believe it because it is absurd.

Thank heavens that the voting majority of Americans remain Christian and are in no desperate need of a phony savior.

His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any thinking American.

Hey puppet, not ALL women voters are hilary supporters ya know. Also, don't go throwing stones about experience when Obama is the #1 man on the Dem ticket.
Palin is gonna kick arse and take names!

Brilliant Choice!!!
Anyone that watched the Democratic Convention had to have seen Bill Clinton mouthing "I Love You" to Hillary when she was speaking...I'm sure that he'll be doing the same thing when Sarah is giving her acceptance speech!
The only way that NOBAMA could have topped this was to pick a Black/Hispanic speaking Woman...
VOTE!!!

This is the turning point. With Sarah Palin as VP, my wife, son, daughter and I have switched parties from Democrat to Republican.

Someone on this blog shouts "Obama rocks." Now he can change it to Obama squeeks."

Republicans only want candidates who "keep their places" in a white man's world. When Obama is confident and strong, they term him "uppity.'. Their crcodile tears for Hillary being passed over are laughable since they villified her for 16 years as the "b" word reserved for strong women. They nominate a self-described "hockey mom" with minimal background, and ideas locked in ultra-conservative views that define women's role secondaru to men. And then they believe that will get them votes that went to Hillary who fought hard her entire life. Sorry, guys, you don't just put a crown on someone who hasn't earned her way or demonstrated anything of substance and expect women to turn out en masse for the ticket. She will not be a game changer, and no amount of spin will change that.

Read again, I said or Hilary supporters.
And no, I did not support her.

As for experience and qualifications, I think Obama has at least a bit more than Palin does.

He could have picked Charles Manson and the Republicans around here would have screamed "great choice!"

As I stated earlier.......this election gets more bizarre every day.

:-)

#26 Posted by Optipess on August 30, 2008 at 10:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)

no matter who the republicans picked it would have been a 'great choice'. c'mon, all the other choices mccain had that were in the primary elections with him, condi rice (if a woman was so important to him), charlie crist, and the list goes on and on. if he makes decisions like this, god help us. who would stand up to an arab leader better, sarah or joe? if i was a woman had a down syndrome child at age 44 (or any age for that matter) i think i would want to be home giving all my love and attention to that child as i think any mom would. there is a real family value! and all these things said about her looks, being sexy, etc., if i was a woman i would call that sexist and be very offended.

#27 Posted by naples759 on August 30, 2008 at 12:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

How does this choice improve the economy, bring about greater peace in the Middle East, help the uninsured, make the USA less oil dependent and restore our moral ground in the world?

I guess the Canadians will love her, she is a Hockey Mom. She shots guns, that will make us safer, she wants to drill for more oil in ANWAR, (McCain does not, he wants to drill in Florida)

I saw some photos of the town where she was mayor, her most experience before becoming the Governor of a State with fewer people in it than the City of Miami. The town where she was mayor looked like a movie set from an old Cowboy Western Ghost town.

Think of it, she is the Governor from a state that has one quarter the people of Miami (2,956,000) Alaska 700,000. Which means she has less governing experience than a Miami Councilman.

I wonder what would happen to McSame's choice if it gets out that the child with Downes Syndrome that Palin supposedly gave birth to this year was really her daughter's, the same daughter held out of school with "mono" for the last four months of the pregnancy? KABOOM.

You are exactly what is wrong with this country. Supporting someone only b/c they hunt and fish.

I am a big fishermen and I certainly realize all of the issues and what is important for making my life better.

If you are part of the wealthy Naples community then you are probably a greedy republican that only cares about yourself.

If you are not of the wealthy in Naples and still support this republican idiot then you are voting for the same policies that are making your life worse than it could be. You deserve the suffering that you are feeling.

I think some Americans just do not have the brain capacity to process all of the information about all of the issues that affect your everyday lives. Most of you vote for the same person that is harming you.

Palin is so pathetic for DUH Repubbys!

She will leave her kids for four months to campaign. Let's hear it for a dedicated mother!

ZERO ...ZERO economic strategy experience....ZERO...COLD...FREEZING...frigid.. fits her DARK Alaskan STATE MENTALITY of ZERO understanding of economic policy.

So hypothetically...McCainiac croaks as Prez...she is going to understand how to be a leader?

Hockey Momma is gonna rule the U.S.A. some day.

NOT!

Another vote for Obama and HIS FIRST WIFE, Michele, and their family, 2!

Dems R loving this stuff!

#35 Posted by elnuestros on August 31, 2008 at 12:05 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Of course local Republicans are on board. The Republicans will do anything to save their butts in this election. Republicans never call out other Republicans even when they know they are wrong (a la Ronald Reagan) . That's why the party has been successful in recent times.

What local Republicans really think about this pick by McCain is that it is idiotic. A total moronic move. But hey, if it helps them win, cool. They just want to maintain right now, knowing that their so-called leader Bush has recked the party. Cheney didn't help their cause either. At least Palin gives them something to talk about.

#36 Posted by SmartyPantsIndependent on August 31, 2008 at 12:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I'm a 4th generation, life long conservative and Republican, and I will probably still vote for McCain despite all this, but I am not happy about this choice at all. If I believed Obama could deliver what he promised, or even meant what he said in his acceptance speech, this would have made me vote for a Democrat for the first time in my long adult life.

I would have advocated Romney, Rice, Hutchinson, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Giuliani, Jindal, (not lib-in-disguise Crist!), heck I don't know, a whole list rather than whatsername! I am deeply disappointed and cannot bring myself to pretend I'm not. Spin it however you want to, I think it's a disaster.

If hunting and fishing and NRA membership qualified a person for VP, heck, I could be on the list. Short term governor of Alaska, okay, but I thought McCain needed a REALLY good VP to have a chance.

I think we can probably expect a Democrat victory and all its negative side effects: sharply higher taxes despite Obama's rhetoric, a huge push toward socialism, an international appeasement policy, unfettered illegal immigration (either way!), a government health care fiasco worse than Medicare or VA healthcare, compelled unionization, another huge gun grab from law abiding citizens, social-engineeting Supreme Court nominees, and "the Fairness Act" to stifle and suppress any opposing views. But I could be wrong. I hope so.

#37 Posted by Sayswho on August 31, 2008 at 10:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Notice how the the local Republicans all said "brilliant!"?
Just like our Stepford Principles all said "All children can learn." when asked about their Educational Philosophy.
Palin would fit right in here in Naples where people never seem to wake up, they just repeat the mantras drilled in to their empty heads by their superiors!
