A single-engine aircraft crashed in the Gulf of Mexico off Boca Grande on Friday afternoon.
The plane, piloted by 69-year-old Glen Koedding of Punta Gorda, was submerged about 100 feet off shore near 4043 Shore Lane, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
Two citizens swam to assist Koedding, who was spotted swimming away from the fixed-wing airplane, reports show. Koedding was treated and released from Charlotte Regional Medical Center.
Efforts are continuing to pull the 1976 Rockwell International 112A aircraft from the water and representatives with the Federal Aviation Administration are expected on the scene soon, the Sheriff's Office reports.

It is tricky to fly over water...it freaked me out when I flew near Marco Island and the shores of Naples.
On a sunny day the water and the horizon become one.
Freakin sailboats look like they are flyin.
The guy probably ran out of gas, or had engine trouble.
Or his eyes played tricks on him.
Thank goodness he made it in okay.
