The Gulf Coast High School girls basketball team survived and advanced in the Class 5A-District 15 semifinals on Friday at Cape Coral-Baker.

North Fort Myers missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime, after the Sharks missed four free throws in the extra session, and Gulf Coast hung on for a 69-67 victory.

Meanwhile, Barron Collier (25-3) cruised to a 58-25 victory over Cape Coral in the other semifinal. So the two Collier County schools will meet tonight at 7 for the district title.

“We were up in the fourth quarter and let it slip away,’’ Gulf Coast coach Pierre Eaton said. “They tied it. We had a last-second shot. We missed it, and then it went into overtime.

“If we would’ve hit foul shots in overtime, we would’ve iced the game.’’

The Sharks (18-8) won with their depth and others picking up after leading scorer Riki Carach and others got into foul trouble.

Molly Lawson had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Amanda Leonard added seven points and 14 boards.

Katie Lyon added 15 points and Kirsten Langdon had 14.

“I was real proud of the kids at the end of the game,’’ Eaton said. “Three starters were sitting halfway through the fourth quarter. We played without them through the end of the fourth quarter and overtime.’’

MacHera Calhoun scored 20 points for the Knights.

In the second game, the Cougars led 15-8 after one quarter, but outscored the Seahawks, 21-3, in the second quarter and never looked back.

“I thought we came out with a lot of good defensive intensity,’’ BC coach Mike Hamburger said. “I thought Erin Zampell did a great job on (Alexiss) Griffin, their leading scorer, holding her to two field goals.’’

Kelsey Assarian scored 17 points to lead BC, and Zampell added 10.
