Residents petition for signal at Imperial Harbor and Old 41 Road
More than 90 residents of the Imperial Harbor have petitioned the city for a left turn signal at the entrance to their mobile home community off Old 41 Road. The turn has become more difficult with road construction widening that road.
That whole area near the post office can be difficult to drive, Councilwoman Martha Simons said, bringing the petitions to the City Council's attention.
Daryl Walk, the city's public works manager, said it's "probably a minor cost" to order a signal with a left turn cycle, while it would be more expensive to switch later.
Not everyone on council was certain this intersection was a priority, though.
"We have many other communities that face the same problem," Mayor Jay Arend said. "The other thing is it's going to take more time away from Old 41 traffic."
City Manager Gary Price, though, said the delay wouldn't be too bad. City staff will continue to look at the insection.

Today the city council agreed to spend $20,000.00 To advertise and promote a free picnic in the park that was approved at $62,000.00. Do you really think they will spend the money to protect 100s of elderly citizens with a proper trafic light. They have more impotrant things to waste money on than safety issues. Why just forget about that light and go on down and enjoy the park. If you can get out to vote, you know how to react to this type of thinking. Throw elected public servants out. It is time for a change..

Dear Ken,
I am pretty sure we are going to get the traffic turn signal for Imperial Harbor Blvd and Old 41. Residents there are a nice group of people and now how to go about working with others to get the changes they need. I am proud to represent them and do what I can to make them safe.
Is the free Picnic in the Park you are talking about Celebrate Bonita?
You don't want to celebrate our city? This is the most well attended event we have the Riverside Park bandshell and residents love it.
Come to think of it. I don't think I have ever seen you at Celebrate Bonita. You should come to it. You would have fun Ken.

Dear Martha: I note your response, and can only say that celebrate bonita etc are wonderful programs and do offer something for some of the people if only for one day. My concern is that they are appropriate only in cities that can clearly afford such frivoulus expense items. Clearly the $82,000.00 that will be spent for this one day event could be better used to enhance the lives of all of our citizens for all of their lives by applying such a windfall of cash to needed projects such as proper street lighting, traffic controls, improved safety and policing, etc. The frivoulus and careless expenditure on feel good projects is and has been a hallmark of our city council. As I see it and as many others see it, it is a question of priorities. When Bonita matures and is financially stable and has money for happy times, then and only then should they be considered. Too much careless expenditure of the taxpayers money is and will continue to be the way of life untill we can establish a government that represents the NEEDS of ALL of the people first. That is to say, addresses the NEEDS first and the wants second. I guess that is what is called being a fiscal conservative. IE People first, needs first. Wants and feel goods come in second. I will gladly join in City celabrations, when I feel that the expense is justified, and the NEEDS of the people have been fully met, and we are not just enjoying another walk in the park to blow our own horns. while picking the pockets of our taxpaying citizens to do it.

to the people of imperial harbor,,
the road is under construction just like too many other roads so deal with it for now and get over it, when the construction is completed (and who knows when that will be) and the intersection still isnt satisfactory, then you can complain. i've pulled from that side of the intersection before and its not easy to get out but if you know how to use your gas pedal and you have some gonads then its pretty easy, this is southwest florida, if you dont drive aggressively then you'll never get anywhere. the red light going left onto old 41 from shangri la stays red for at least 5 minutes,,, now thats something to complain about,,,, the right turn lane onto shangri la from old 41 north is ridiculous, if theres one car in front of you at the red light then you have to wait for the light to change,,, that right turn lane should start at least another 100 yards back.

Chenzo,
Good comments about the lights. I am going to forward those to our City Public Works Dept. They should be aware of the difficulties you are encountering so we can straighten them out.
BTW In the article about business on Old 41 and need for signs says the Old 41 widening is ahead of schedule and all phases should be complete by late June.
Ken, lighten up. There is a place for feel good items but I don't think you will ever agree with that. As for street lighting, FPL will provide equipment and we pay for electric. The problem is getting easements granted and tracking down property owners to agree to allow lights on their property. We have an ok from FPL to place lights on one street in our neighborhood and the owners ( out of town).
