Party goers and club maniacs of Southwest Florida, RELAX!

Sway Lounge, one of Naples’ most beloved clubs, surprised everyone by closing its doors last week on Tuesday. Rumors, questions and unbelievably crazy stories started circulating almost immediately, but no one really knew what was happening.

Former Sway Lounge owner Bryant Junker was kind enough to welcome me into his home to discuss the past, present and future of one of the most successful establishments in Southwest Florida.

For more than a year Sway Lounge had represented the only option around Naples when it came to glitzy cocktail parties, minimalist Miami-style atmosphere and entertainment extravaganza, mixing together famous techno and house celebrity DJs and ethno-acoustic sounds from East coast bands like The Spam All Stars.

When Sway abruptly closed its doors last week, the decision raised a few eyebrows and a lot of questions. Why would they close right when everything was up and running perfectly?

Bryant Yunker smiles sarcastically when I ask him about the rumors. He has heard them all, and admits that some of them are really incredible. But the truth is, nothing crazy or dramatic happened.

“I always wanted to open a successful nightclub. So I did. And I checked it off my list of things to do. That’s it.”

So no drama, no lawsuits, no problems of any kind. Yunker, who has been in finance all his life, always looked at Sway as a business opportunity: being a nightclub owner for the rest of his life never crossed his mind. When the opportunity to sell Sway for a profit arose, he took it.

Although it’s reopening under new ownership, Sway will stay pretty much the same: same name, same staff, same avant-garde concept. If you stop by on a Friday or Saturday night you’ll even still see Yunker hanging out: the only difference will be that he’ll be relaxing and having fun like all the other customers.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
