Local filmmakers Cord McConnell and Carlos Calante are raising money for their newest project: “Fortunate Son,” a short film shot on 16mm film.

These young filmmakers are looking for donations to fund this film. To ensure a suitable product, they are hoping to receive $3,000. When the film is complete, it will be entered into dozens of film festivals, including the Sarasota Film Festival, Black Maria Film Festival, and Berkshire International Film Festival.

Cord McConnell is a recent graduate from Florida Gulf Coast University with a communications degree and a minor in interdisciplinary studies. He has spent time being the film critic for Fox 4’s “Morning Blend.” Cord has completed several short films, some narrative pieces, and promotional videos. Cord has written the script and plans to direct the upcoming “Fortunate Son.”

Carlos Calante is persuing a degree in business management at Florida Gulf Coast University. He works full time as the sports editor for the student-run newspaper at FGCU. Carlos also owns and operates his own video production company, Shugzar Productions LLC, in which Cord is a partner.

The Synopsis: This dark comedy plans to be 10 to 15 minutes in length and will star local talent. It’s a day in the life of small-time hit man who still lives with his parents. This quirky family has become accustomed to the fact that their son pays his rent by spilling the blood of his victims. Things go sour when the hit man’s boss double-crosses him and brings the parents into the mix.

The budget for the film revolves around the purchase and development of film stock. The rental of camera equipment, lighting, sound and other necessities are all donations from Cage XXI Enterprises, a Southwest Florida Film Production Company. The shoot is scheduled to take 3 days.

Once the film is sent to the processing lab and returned, postproduction will begin. The film is set to shoot early August and will be compete and sent to festivals by November. For information please contact Cord McConnell at (413) 281-3543 or email crmcconn@gmail.com
