Firecats beat Thunderbirds again to snap losing streak

The Florida Firecats snapped their three-game losing skid — the franchise’s longest such streak in six seasons — with a 41-35 road victory over the Daytona Beach ThunderBirds on Thursday night.

It was the third victory for the Firecats (9-4) over expansion Daytona Beach this season, with the teams meeting for a final time July 26 at Germain Arena in the final game of the regular season.

On Thursday, Tony Stubbs returned a failed 56-yard field goal attempt back for a score on the final play of the first half to give the Firecats a 20-7 lead at the break.

But Daytona Beach (2-11) didn’t go quietly.

The ThunderBirds took a 28-27 lead early in the fourth quarter on quarterback Steven Moffett’s 25-yard touchdown run.

Firecats quarterback Chris Wallace hooked up with Magic Benton for a 30-yard score with 7:05 left in the game to put Florida back on top 34-28, then James Gibson scored his second 1-yard touchdown of the game with 4:50 remaining to make a 41-28 Florida advantage.

Wallace finished 23-of-38 passing for 169 yards, with two interceptions and two touchdowns. Wallace and Benton connected eight times for 91 yards.
