Estero guard excels at Pat Summitt Basketball Camp

When she returns to Estero High for her senior year in August, Jackie Murray won’t have any problem filling the pages of a “What I Did On My Summer Break” essay.

Murray, the starting point guard on the Wildcats girls basketball team, shined at the Pat Summitt Basketball Camp last month at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She defeated about 80 other campers to win the Hot Shot shooting competition and she was named to the camp all-star team.

Just meeting Summitt — who has coached the Lady Volunteers to eight national titles, including the past two — would have been enough of a thrill for Murray.

“She’s amazing. It was an honor just to stand in her presence,” said Murray.

But to win the shooting competition and earn all-star status made the four-day camp even more memorable.

“I was thrilled,” Murray said.

The pressure of having to sink shots in front of a legendary coach didn’t phase Murray. She captured the shooting contest in which players have one minute to make as many points as possible. Murray was tied with two other players after the first round. She then won a tie-breaker round by one point.

“I knew (Summitt) was watching me,” she said. “My heart was pounding, but I didn’t let it get to me.”

Murray was rewarded for her sharp shooting skills. She received a certificate and Volunteers yearbook from Summitt.

“She handed me the certificate and I was trembling,” said Murray, who has been a Tennessee fan ever since her first dribble as a youngster.

In the all-star game, Murray scored about a half-dozen points, made a couple steals and dished out several assists. She was one of 16 players out of more than 500 in the camp to be selected an all-star.

Before heading back home to Bonita Springs, Murray received one more thrill when she approached Summitt at the end of the camp.

“She greeted me by name,” said Murray.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
