For the Golden Gate National junior all-stars, Friday's District 27 championship was met more with relief than jubilation.
Thanks to some uncooperative weather, it took National four days to complete two games and finally win the district title. Both the team's games in the tournament were suspended by rain this week, resulting in four partial games rather than two straight sets of seven innings.
Once the skies finally cleared, National was able to get past Golden Gate American with a 7-3 victory at Golden Gate Community Park. With the win, National finished 2-0 in the district tournament, sending the team onto sectionals Friday at San Carlos Park.
It's fantastic, National manager Tony Scott said. It's a big weight lifted off our chest. These kids really worked hard. They deserve it.
Friday's game started Tuesday, but was suspended in the top of the second inning with National leading 4-1. Scott said he worried that the three days rest in between would halt his team's momentum, but that wasn't the case.
National scored twice in their first at-bat Friday to lead 6-1 after two frames. American put up two runs in the fourth, but National added the final score of the game in the sixth.
It's hard because (rain-outs) stop your momentum, and it's tough to get back, National player Andrew Hill said. If won this game, it was our championship. That was our motivation.
Sammy Aleman was the offensive star for National in the final game. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs. Anthony DeLuca added a double, while Chris Robinson and Joe Anthony also had hits.
After American scored in the fourth to pull within three run, Jacob Cabrera took the mound for National and shut out his opponent the rest of the way.
They just overcame all the adversity and laid it all out on the field the way the game is supposed to be played, Scott said of his all-stars.
