Youth softball: Greater Fort Myers knocks off Golden Gate 9-10s in section tourney

— Earlier in the week, the Golden Gate 9- through 10-year-old All Stars were on top of the world after beating the Naples Rockets in a grueling 22-12 victory for the District 27 championship.

The joy was short-lived, however, after dropping two games to Greater Fort Myers on Saturday morning at Sam Fleishman Park, 7-4 and 11-2, in its Section 6 championship series.

"We just had one bad inning in the fourth of the first game, and they scored five of their seven runs on us," Golden Gate manager Troy Gutteridge said. "The same thing happened to us in the second game too, but more than that, I think they did some scouting; they knew the left side of our infield and catcher are strong, so they didn't try to run on us -- even when we had some passed balls."

Greater Fort Myers advances to the state tournament in Indian River City next weekend.

After Greater Fort Myers got out to a 4-2 lead by the third inning of the second game, it exploded offensively in the top of the fourth again.

With one out, Golden Gate pitcher Nicki Tisch walked Molly Duignam and Colleen Murray in consecutive at-bats. Tatum Torchiapate was able to reach safely on a bunt single to load the bases and Greater Fort Myers capitalized by getting three consecutive run-scoring singles from Jordan Chase, Stephanie Norris, and Maria Nelson at the top of the order. The three hits led to five runs.

Greater Fort Myers finished things up in the top of the sixth, after Norris reached on a one-out bloop single. Nelson followed that with a run-scoring double to make the score 10-2, then after stealing third, came home on a pitch that got away from Golden Gate catcher Hailey Foye.

Even with the heart of the Golden Gate batting order up in the bottom of the sixth, the All-Stars couldn't muster any offense as Brooke Gutteridge grounded out to pitcher Anna Cedarburg, Tisch popped out to short, and Foye was tagged out after over-running first base.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to beat a team from Naples and a credit to not just these players but to everyone in this league," Fort Myers manager Lee Norris said. "I don't know that a Greater Fort Myers team has ever made it this far. It's always been a Cape Coral or Naples team."

Seems to me that Naples Daily News never gets the whole story. That's why the have a GFM girl listed as being part of the batting line up for Golden Gate. First rule of journalism, get your facts straight.

Both pitchers for Golden Gate did a great job both last week and this weekend. It's never mentioned. They only mention that the pitcher last week struggled. Of the 15 outs in that game, she struck out 9. This weekend both pitchers struck out 6 in each game. Haley Foye caught 2 games in 90 degree weather and did a great job at bat. Is that in the article?? Let's remember that these girls are 9 and 10 yrs old.

No one person lost those games yesterday. The team won last week and the TEAM lost yesterday. Either way, be proud of what they accomplished.

A huge congrats to the girls! A congrats and thank you to Coach Dudo and Coach Troy!

Players, Great job for what you have accomplished. Sectionals was an opportunity to take in, not to take to heart. Use this as an experience towards next year.
Winning Districts was a huge success and I know how hard you worked to get there! Blood, Sweat, & Tears!! You all are so awesome and I am so proud of you!

Coaches, Great job for taking these girls as far as they went. Thank you for your tremendous amount of time, energy, patience, and heart you had in these girls. Not to mention ankles!
