— After not even playing a district tournament, the Naples Braves found themselves off to a much better start on Saturday before rain forced their second game against Lehigh to be rescheduled.

They beat the DeSoto All-Stars 17-0 in the first game of their round-robin play in the sectional tournament, which was also held at Sam Fleishman Park in Fort Myers.

Naples' biggest chunk of offense came in the top of the third after jumping out to a 4-0 advantage in the first. Katie Raile led off with triple and scored on the first of back-to-back RBI doubles by Lexi Corrente and Lauren Tremblay. After Stephanie Bazley reached on a bunt single, Carissa Porter brought her and Tremblay home to up the score to 8-0.

Naples followed that by loading the bases again and getting a three-run double by Sabrina Brett to increase the lead to 12-0, and received two more run-scoring hits from Corrente and Tremblay.

"I think that it was nice that we hit the ball and I am glad (DeSoto) used the pitcher they did against us because she had good speed and our batters hit that well," Naples manager Jeff Stepanovich said. "We played well enough to get the runs we needed to win, and only gave up two hits so we made the defensive plays when we needed to."

After thunderstorms rolled in, it was decided that the Braves would finish up its sectional appearance against Lehigh, which also beat DeSoto by double-digits, Sunday at noon.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
