Sheila’s Out Shopping: Shopping spree

STORY TOOLS

I heard so much about the renovation and addition at Saks Fifth Avenue, I couldn’t wait to see the new look for myself. I knew the jewelry, cosmetics, ladies shoes and men’s departments would be larger and revamped, but I didn’t realize how terrific the new space would become. It’s so light and bright and the sales people seem ready to please. It felt as if I was in a store in a large city.

Of course, I couldn’t leave without shopping the new departments and was thrilled with what I brought home with me.

My first stop was cosmetics. I entered the Chantecaille shop to see the newest cosmetic line at Saks. I really like the freedom of browsing in the new cosmetics shops and not leaning over a counter to catch a glimpse of what’s not displayed. The creamy colors of the lipsticks ($26) caught my eye, but what sold me was the fact that the company didn’t test on animals. I also bought the glossy lip balm ($26) with a SPF 15 to combat the sun’s rays.

My heart started pounding as soon as I entered the shoe department. I’m not quite a shoe addict, but what my husband calls a “collector.” My had-to-have purchase was the Manalo Blahnik red quilted flats ($535). They also came in black, but red did it for me. I flipped for the stilettos, but the flats are shoes I can wear anytime. Chanel also had a new flat that I liked. It came in black, blue or camel with a patent trim ($598), but I still kept going back to the red Manalos. If you have a really special occasion coming up try on Miu Miu’s d’orsay in gold, copper and pewter with a jeweled encrusted metal heel ($750). They will make a statement entering — and leaving — any event.

The men’s department isn’t quite finished, but I managed to pick up a Robert Graham shirt for my husband. (I had to bring him something to ease my conscience about my own purchases.) The striped cotton shirts ($188-$228) have a contrasting pattern under the collar and cuffs and down the button placket, which allows you to wear the shirt with the cuffs turned up. They are bright, fun and easy to wear. Etro’s glen plaid velvet blazer ($1,350) was different and would be a nice addition to most men’s winter wardrobe.

I left the best for last: The new jewelry department. Everything you ever dreamed about (and more) is in these counters. But I was stopped in my tracks by de Grisogono’s ruby and diamond pave ring ($12,500). It’s a showstopper with 63 red rubies totaling 4.57 carats and 48 diamonds totaling 1.31 carats. All set in 18- karat white gold. The Katy Briscoe chunky 18-karat gold chain bracelet ($16,000) is a piece that will be handed down to your grandchildren. And it’s ultra versatile: You can wear it with a basic black dress or a ball gown. I also liked the simplicity of the Donald Huber double-strand diamond and white gold bracelet ($8.400).

I left these sparklers on my wish list for a big birthday or anniversary. Hint, hint!

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
