TENNIS

 Bonita Bay Club & Pelican Landings are scheduled to host Florida’s Southwest Region USTA Adult League Championship this weekend. Play was slated to start Friday and continue through Sunday. Teams will compete for a spot in the Sectional Championships to be held in Daytona Aug. 8-10.

 USTA Florida is accepting nominations for all 2008 award categories, to be presented at the USTA Florida Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Weekend, Dec. 6.  Swingtime — a celebrity pro-am tennis event and pro-am golf tournament — will be held Nov. 22-23 in Naples. The tennis pro-am will be hosted by The Player’s Club & Spa at Lely Resort. Current ATP players Mardy Fish and Sebastien Grosjean are among the early commitments. BIKING

The Lee County Department of Transportation has established an alternate route for bicycle traffic normally traveling the Summerlin Road Corridor between Cypress Lake Drive and Boy Scout Drive. The alternate route is west of Summerlin Road and will remain as a detour through the duration of the widening project. The route passes through Edison Community College, Whiskey Creek, and Tanglewood sub-divisions and utilizes a portion of the existing bike path adjacent to the west property line of the Cedar Bend sub-division. Users of the path traveling north will exit the detour at Matthew Drive where they can continue north on Summerlin Road or south on Summerlin Road to access Boy Scout Drive. Users traveling south will use the same route and exit at the intersection of Edison Lane and Cypress Lake Drive where they can travel east back to Summerlin Road.

HUNTING

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will hold the completion day portion of its free hunter safety course Aug. 9 in Hendry County. Students will learn about current laws, safe gun handling, ethics, firearms, ammunition and marksmanship before taking the final test. The safety course also includes live-firing instruction on a shooting range. The FWC will offer the course 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office Shooting Range. Participants must have successfully completed the online portion of the course. They must print out the final Web report prior to the Aug. 9 class. Information: 561-625-5122, or MyFWC.com/huntered

 Parking fees will be waived at Lee County regional parks and boat ramps and swimmers will have free admission to county pools on the weekend of Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27. Lee County Commissioners waived the parking fees and pool admission in celebration of National Parks & Recreation Month, which is marked each July.

 Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve in Fort Myers will host Wilderness Explorers, a nature camp for ages 12-16. Learn about animals and nature. Hands-on learning every session. Dates are July 21-25 and July 28-31. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Information: Heather Gienapp at 533-7556 or 533-7440

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
