San Carlos LL loses Section 6 opener
San Carlos fell to Sarasota Florida, 5-2, in a Section 6 Little League tournament opener on Friday night at Three Oaks Park.
FORT MYERS Chad Miller figured one home run wasn't enough.
So the Sarasota Florida shortstop wasted no time taking action into his own hands...again.
On a first pitch fastball, Miller slugged his second home run of the game. The two-run shot to center in the fifth inning regained a comfortable lead for Sarasota, which topped host San Carlos, 5-2, Friday night in the Section 6 Little League tournament opener at Three Oaks Park.
"I was looking for the fastball to jump on it. I knew I had to hit one," said Miller, who has five home runs this all-star season.
Miller's first round-tripper -- also a two-run job -- staked Sarasota to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the second. Matthew Tarallo led off with a single. Tarallo's pinch runner -- Patrick McKenzie -- eventually scored on a wild pitch.
But San Carlos, which showed plenty of heart while winning the District 18 championship, battled back by strutting some power of its own.
Sammy Katona led off the third with a walk. Two outs later, Alex Merrill crushed a home run over the left field fence to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Kenny Corrigan wasn't phased by the blast. The Sarasota starting pitcher didn't allow a runner past first base the rest of the night. Corrigan scattered five hits and fanned 11 in a complete game effort.
A couple times when San Carlos put runners on they became their own worst enemy.
"We made a couple of errors that were key, baserunning errors," said San Carlos manager Nick Nataro.
Merrill led San Carlos with two hits. Brett Schumbacker, Nick Nataro and Caleb Chapman notched one hit apiece.
A trio of San Carlos pitchers -- starter Ryan Holton, Chapman, who was solid in long relief, and Merrill -- limited Sarasota to six hits.
In the Section's other game Friday, Fort Myers American edged Greater Naples, 4-2.
All four teams are scheduled to return to Three Oaks Park for two games each on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
