SAN CARLOS PARK Three batters in, the Greater Naples Little Leaguers knew they were in for a tough night.
Fort Myers American hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 4-2 win against Greater Naples in the first night of the Section 6 round-robin Little League tournament.
Fort Myers American “was certainly the best team we’ve faced this year,” Greater Naples coach Bryan Smith said.
But his Greater Naples squad hung in, recovering from back-to-back hitless innings with a home run from Connor Riley to lead off the third.
Fort Myers American came back in the third to make it 3-1 off an RBI single from Gunnar Joslin that scored Evan Dougherty, who scored again in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2.
Greater Naples had gotten within a run again in the top of the fourth, off a home run to left field from pitcher Jordan Jackson.
The 12-year-old Jackson was an all-around star in Friday’s game, pitching all six innings and making a key double play on a diving catch to end the first inning.
Jackson also got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, striking out three in a row to end the inning.
Greater Naples will play San Carlos at 10 a.m. today at Three Oaks Community Park, and later faces Sarasota Florida at 1 p.m. Fort Myers American will play Sarasota at 10 a.m. and San Carlos at 1 p.m.
SARASOTA FLORIDA 5, SAN CARLOS 2: Sarasota Florida beat San Carlos Little League All-Stars 5-2 on Friday night at Three Oaks Community Park, in the first game.
Shortstop Chad Miller had two home runs for Sarasota, and Alex Merrill had a two-run home run for San Carlos.
“We had a couple key base running errors ... some guys staring at third strikes,” San Carlos coach Nick Nataro said.
