— Padraig Harrington has won his second straight British Open, overtaking 53-year-old Greg Norman and fending off Ian Poulter.

Harrington, who beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff last year, shot a 1-under 69 on a blustery Sunday at Royal Birkdale. He won by four strokes with a 3-over 283 total. The Irishman wrapped up the claret jug with an eagle at the next-to-last hole.

Poulter of England also shot 69 to finish second at 287.

Norman, the founder and host of the Merrill Lynch Shootout in Naples, was trying to become the oldest major champion in golf history, starting the final round with a two-stroke lead. The Aussie struggled to a 77 and finished six strokes behind Harrington. He tied for third with Henrik Stenson.

Naples' Rocco Mediate, a Calusa Pines Golf Club member, shot his second straight 76 and tied for 19th. Mediate played the final 10 holes at 1-over. Also tying for 19th was Fredrik Jacobson, who has an affiliation with West Bay Club in Estero. Jacobson had a 2-over 72.
