Former Collier Democratic chief stands by Clinton

Who will win in November?

Mohlke

Mohlke

Forget Montana and South Dakota.

Go with the flow on Florida’s half-vote delegate status.

The longtime political advocate may have resigned as chairman of the Democratic Party of Collier County in April, but Chuck Mohlke still is a strong Southwest Florida superdelegate who remains committed to Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House.

While worldwide speculation swirled Tuesday on whether Clinton would quit the Democratic race for the presidency, Mohlke said the former first lady is still his choice.

“I will remain committed until she releases me,” Mohlke said Tuesday.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Clinton told New Yorkers that she’s open to serving as Sen. Barack Obama’s running mate.

Mohlke is one of 27 superdelegates — or electoral votes — from Florida, and one of 211 Florida delegates.

Delegates and superdelegates will each get one-half vote.

The “super” designation — which some say was born in the 1972 presidential race — amuses Mohlke amid the controversy that surrounded the ability of Florida and Michigan delegates to be seated.

That changed Saturday afternoon, when the Democratic National Committee recognized the importance of Florida’s voters. The DNC’s decision allows for all of Florida’s 211 delegates to be seated at the National Convention, but will only allow each to cast a half-vote.

However, that puts Florida Democrats on “equal footing with Florida Republicans, who were penalized by their national party with a 50 percent delegation reduction,” according to Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Karen Thurman.

“Because it is an important step toward winning Florida in November, both the Clinton and Obama campaigns support this (half-vote) decision, Thurman said in a prepared statement.

On Tuesday, Thurman said it wouldn’t have mattered to her if Clinton served as Obama’s running mate, or vice versa.

“For me, either way, this is a historic opportunity,” Thurman said, referring to the possibility of a first woman president or vice president, or first black president or vice president.

Mohlke’s sentiments are similar.

“You go with the flow and do what you can to protect the interest of your party and candidate,” Mohlke said. “If you lose, you attempt to lose graciously.”

In her statement, Thurman reiterated that Republican hopeful John McCain “cannot win the White House without our 27 electoral votes.”

“Those 27 votes are what we must focus on from now until November 4th,” she said.

If he still has any intention of another position in the Democratic party he probably doesn't want to be seen bailing out on her on his own.

The world is upside down! The tyranny of political correctness (PC) represses a public discourse regarding our true feelings regarding this nomination. In the quiet and solitude of the voting booth, when PC is subordinated to reality and privacy, the "turtle on the post" will lose.

Obama won, and I can live with that and will vote for him. However, the DNC took half of my vote, so you can blasted well believe they will only get half of what I would have normally contributed, both in money and time.

Don't worry...they'll get the rest of it in tax hikes.

pauls - unfortunately I am not in the highest 5% income bracket, so I won't have to worry about it when the Democrats repeal Bush's tax cut for the wealthy. Interesting that McCain was also against Bush's tax cut before he made another run for the Republican nomination and decided he is now for it. Of course he changed his views on quite a number of other issues, including amnesty for illegals. The only thing he has really been consistent on is Bush's trumped up war in Iraq.

She's been running for all of the wrong reasons and she did nothing but LIE all of the way. The best place for her to go, now, is HOME !!  And STAY there ! Go press your 300+ fat-a** pant suits and and try to think what needs to be done to keep your randy and philandering husband in check and out of the limelight.  Bye  Bye, Hillary !!! Yipee  !!!!!!

They always say "we're just going to increase taxes on the 'wealthy'". I would not be the least bit surprised to see the level they define as "wealthy" drift downward before they're done...but then they're never done taxing.

I recall hearing the Alternative Means Tax (intended to go after the rich who manage not to have much of a tax bill under normal tax codes) started out being applied to 100 people when it was first created. It has now exploded in scope, enveloping people it was never intended to apply to. It has become so messed up even the IRS has been begging for it to be eliminated because they can't make sense of it.

pauls - who has been in charge of the IRS for 20 of the 28 past years that the AMT has been effect? Republicans. Yet you blame it not being tied to inflation on Democrats? Even for the 8 years a Democrat held the White House 6 of those years had a Republican controlled Congress. Government size and cost has grown more in the past seven years than anytime in our history, including WW II. You can blame the ATM on Democrats all you want, but they are NOT the ones who have failed to index the rates. Finally this year a DEMOCRAT CONGRESS pushed the ATM trigger up a bit. Next year, with a Democrat in the White House and a Democrat Congress it will finally be indexed so that the wealthy pay their fair share and the small business owners and professionals don't have to take up the wealthy's slack.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
