Hookin’ you up: June 3, 2008
The long, hot days of summer are approaching along with big summer tides. Looking for shade not only makes anglers feel more comfortable, but is also likely to pay off in terms of finding fish. Placing your bait carefully is very important. Bait placed right on the edge of the mangroves or as far under them as possible, or along edges of potholes in the grass will work best. Use small chunks of ladyfish or shrimp and a small split shot sinker — No. 5 does the trick. Small live pinfish or any of the variety of herring minnows also work well. With new regulations for circle hooks when using natural bait, it might be a little more difficult to set the hook. Remember, you must allow the fish to swim away.
