Looking for a way to raise money for Naples Originals (a group of local, independent restaurants) and to promote the locally owned restaurants that make up the group, Lisa Boet and company have come up with a pretty brilliant idea: discount certificates.
Each week, the 40-plus member restaurants of Naples Originals donate $50 worth of gift certificates. Then, once a quarter, the group sells them at a 30 percent discount. For $17.50, you get a $25 coupon, and for $35, you get $50. The second quarter sale is Wednesday.
It’s a good deal, but it’s hard to get your hands on. The $50 coupons sell out almost instantly.
“Last time, the $50s sold out that day,” says Boet, owner of Bamboo Cafe. “In 48 hours, we’d raised almost $15,000 for the group.”
That money has gone into promoting the restaurants. Discount coupons isn’t the only idea Boet is using to get people interested in eating locally.
Boet says the member restaurants will be offering special meals priced at $20.08 for a week in July.
“We have to do anything we can to compete with the big chains,” she says. “We’re living in a brand culture where mom and pops get lost.”
