All modern outboard motors have fused links to control proper power supply to electrical components. Other electrical equipment will generally have in-line fuses for added safety. These in-line fuses reduce the likelihood of instrument damage, wire failure, worse yet, meltdown of connectors and the wire proper. The in-line fuses help greatly to eliminate the possibility of onboard fire, one the most dangerous occurrences while shipboard.
A cursory examination of your electrical connection, power requirements of onboard electronics and most critically the amperage and style of the fuses required for engine operation can very easily be done and should be part of your initial and continuing maintenance program.
There are several styles of fuses for motors and onboard electronics. The older style glass tube style is not in use much any more. But if you’ve got older add-ons check to see since they work with a different fuse holder.
The newer automotive, plastic chip style fuses are the much preferred and require a special fuse holder. The chip style fuses are all typical in size and shape but are indemnified by amperage through numbers clearly imposed on the top of the fuse. They can be purchased in packages of a mixed amperage variety or in single package of all the same amperage. Don’t leave home without ‘em.

This also applies to I/O's... which contrary to popular belief do exist here.
I learned my lesson on the fuses years ago... make sure you have a few multi-packs... unless you want to really use your Sea-Tow/Boat U.S. membership that bad.
