Fifth Avenue South just got quieter.
Naples City Council has turned off the music at Sushi-Thai Too, one month after reports surfaced of scantily clad performers dancing on the bar.
Council members on Wednesday voted unanimously to revoke the restaurant’s live entertainment permit after undercover police officers found it was operating outside the permit by hiring the dancers to perform on weekends.
The decision comes two months after council first approved the permit.
According to city code, a permit can be revoked if the entertainment violates city ordinances or if the entertainment has proven to be detrimental to the general health, safety and welfare of the citizens.
“This is a violation of trust,” Councilwoman Teresa Heitmann said.
The city began investigating the club after the Naples Police and Fire Department’s dispatch center received an anonymous call from a woman who said her 27-year-old daughter was approached the previous night at Sushi Thai Too by an unknown man who gave her a business card.
Uniformed officers went to the restaurant May 3 but were unable to find anything improper. They returned a week later and saw “a couple of girls who were scantily clad, dancing throughout the restaurant.”
Restaurant owners have said they didn’t know what was going on at the club at night, and George Montes, who spoke on behalf of the owners, said he understood that the restaurant violated its permit.
“We understand there was a violation of trust,” Montes said. “I am not here to argue about the license, I am at your mercy.”
While Montes doesn’t own the building or the restaurant, he appeared before council in April to request the live entertainment permit.
That permit, issued April 2, allowed a disc jockey to play music indoors from 10 p.m. until 11:30 p.m., as long as the windows and doors are closed and the restaurant complies with noise levels. The restaurant also can have amplified sound — or music without a DJ — playing until 2 a.m.
Naples police Officer Pablo DeBien said “on multiple occasions (officers) not only observed, but had multiple complaints of ladies dancing for money at the club.” DeBien said he witnessed the women, and told the restaurant that it wasn’t permitted.
The undercover officers who investigated didn’t appear before council.
There were no criminal violations at the restaurant, officers said in their report, but in addition to permit violations, the restaurant could have violated the city’s code pertaining to adult entertainment by allowing these dancers on the property.
City code states that in a business selling alcohol, it is against the law for anyone to expose genitals, buttocks or give the impression of exposing those body parts usually covered by underwear. While the women’s breasts were covered, their outfits — a mini-skirt and thong — revealed their backsides, which is against code.
Sushi Thai Too has 30 days to appeal council’s decision, City Attorney Bob Pritt said.
Montes said he didn’t know whether the restaurant would appeal the decision.

Thank goodness, now I've got the complete definition: it is against the law for anyone to expose genitals, buttocks or give the impression of exposing those body parts usually covered by underwear. While the women’s breasts were covered, their outfits — a mini skirt and thong — revealed their backsides,

Thank God!! For a minute there I thought there might be a reason to hang out on Fifth Avenue after the Early Bird dinner. Now I can still be home in bed by 9:30 on Saturday night and not miss anything. My health, safety, and welfare are still intact.

In Naples, Mother Hunnard's are the uniform of choice. Aren't the council members offended by the young girls and women exposing themselves on our beaches?

Those have got to be 2 of the ugliest trolls I've ever seen.

Hell, those women weren't even worth all of the racket they caused. if they would have been the women in the flyer, that might have been interesting and well worth the fuss, but for those two... I dinna think so laddie.
Somehow, I think that things are going to get even worse, as the population of Naples continues to age.

Glad to hear these "loose" women have been taken care of. Fifth Ave. is better left to the decrepit old farts that micromanage our lovely downtown.

Thank God!!! It's nice to know the Naples Police dept. found something to do!! Yet another reason why this town blows.

This is ridiculous and they are still going on about this. Im not for frivilous lawsuits, but say what you will about these girls, I hope they sue the Naples Daily News and Naples Police Department for posting their pictures in the newspaper without blurring their faces. Its one thing to put a mugshot in the paper and its quite another to post their pictures and for the paper itself to make slanderous remarks. You have nightclubs like this everywhere in the world and it is what it is just people having legal fun.

Ok ok, so everyone above with their axes to grind feels better. Let's talk about the stupid business now.
That locale has had brush after brush with the law and with local leaders due to perceived inappropriate activities and flaunting of rules since demise of Hofbrau House back in early 2000. ST II moves in with all of this info well known and they receive permission for a limited amt of music and probably get said permission based upon a decent reputation garnered over the past couple of years.
So what do they do? Dancers on the bar? Owners say they were unaware of goings on. That's crap. Even if they weren't there, they are the ones that hired their GM and managers.
I'm not debating whether or not this activity should be ok in Naples, on 5th, in FL or whatever. I'm only saying that the current rules and atmosphere on 5th in Naples clearly would indicate to any prudent business person that this was going to lead to trouble.
What were they thinking? They weren't.

What they were thinking is "make money while the making is good". Milk it, until they put a stop to it, and then shut the place down completely. Open Sushi Thai III somewhere else and do it all over again.
Lather rinse repeat.

I wonder how the girls in the pictures feel about having their picture plastered all over the NDN. I have no idea about rules on that type of thing, does the NDN have to have consent to publish the picture?

I wonder if ST2 will sue the promoter who brought all of this on. Hmm, there's an idea.
Hip hop is dead.

I am disappointed that the Council didn't give the restaurant a warning. When business is waning on 5th Avenue, Naples is again discouraging new business. Having the portion of 5th Ave. closed from the Sushi Bar, past Corks to stroll and listen to entertainment was a terrific way to encourage residents and visitors to patronize downtown. Perhaps Naples should have a sign saying "Just Say No"---No to business!!! Coconut Point will be a great alternative

Naked women dancing on a bar ... Fun??? Music so loud it shocks your senses ... Fun??? Getting drunk while all this is going on around you ... Fun??? NO! That's just SICK!!!!

Naples beaches are no longer open to the public. Too many "scantily clad women". Listening to music as well! God save us all!
While the business owners/managers were stupid to try this stunt, Naples laws are even more so. Council members are what keep the 5th ave prostitutes thriving. Don't open their closets or we will need to completely re-staff after all the scandal resignations.
BTW - any picture taken in public is open to the public. As long as the girls are of legal age, they have nothing to fight.

In a free country, shouldn’t people be permitted to do what they want to do when it does no harm to others? Why should the morality police be able to tell us how to live, think, and have fun? It might be time to vote in some freedom loving counsel members.

Please, please keep the smut off of 5th Ave. Take it to Ft. "misery" where it belongs. You're making Naples look bad, bad, bad. There are many TASTeful ways to make money in the off season....shame on you!!

I love that the people condemning this "type of behavior" are wealthy carpetbaggers who live here three months out of the year.
No one cares what the locals think. Frankly, I could give a **** about girls dancing on a bar. I mean, really?! You people are offended by a pair of thong underwear? I can only imagine what would happen if you accidentally got a Victoria's Secret catalog in the mail...

If women dancing, clothed, on a bar or table top is offending, then leave. If I patron a resturant and dont like their food, I dont go back. I dont try to have the resturant shut down so the people that do enjoy it are punished. I understand they violated the terms of the permit, fine, but some of the comments in here are so uptight it makes me wonder how they pinch one off.

I'm kind of torn on this one. On one hand I feel for the young people with nothing to do in Naples. On the other hand, I know downtown Naples is not the place to try to have that kind of club. THEY (whoever THEY are) will not allow it. So, I say, go to Fort Myers or Ft. Lauderdale for your entertainment. Apparently Naples doesn't want or need your money. Give it else where. When I was younger and went to bars down here, I went to Ft. Myers, Cape Coral and even occasionally Ft. Lauderdale. Naples has never been the 'entertainment' capital. Anyone who's lived here for a little while knows that. I guess they should try outside the city limits if they want to have a 'scantly clad women' club.

I think the best entertainment on 5th would be a late night book reading session at the local starbucks... we could all go and drink coffee and watch old Andy Griffith shows. Seriously though... 5th is not the place for a club of that caliber. Locate it somewhere else away from the aged gapped patrons. All ages have their own idea of "legal" fun... should not be up to the masses to decide who is allowed to have fun doing whatever it is you do as long as it is legal and away from the ones that do not agree with it. I don't agree with golf, so I choose to stay away from golf courses... logical?

Give me a break.
