Les Cochran, a resident of San Carlos Park, is the newest candidate to qualify for the Lee County Commission district three seat.
Cochran, a retired president of Youngstown State University, lives in Shadow Wood Preserve. He joins a race that includes 20-year incumbent Ray Judah and former Fort Myers Beach mayor Anita Cereceda.
Judah has qualified to run. Cereceda has not done so yet.
Cochran said he’s “fed up and taxed off” and simply couldn’t stay retired.
Cochran is a member of the Republican Executive Committee’s Golden Goose Committee, which has been critical of county budgeting. He also serves on the county’s Local Planning Agency.
Cochran said he’s focused on three things — taxes, water quality and governmental cooperation.
As a candidate without party affiliation, Cochran heads straight to the November ballot. His presence means Judah and Cereceda would face off in a closed Republican primary, if Cereceda qualifies before the Friday deadline.
