Local tennis: Grossklag, Simidian still in championship brackets at Bush Florida Open

It wasn't a good Sunday for the remaining area players in the winners bracket at the Bush Florida Open in Fort Myers.

Only top seeds Amy Grossklag (Girls 16s) of Bonita Springs and Amy Simidian (Girls 18s) of Naples are still in the championship brackets of their respective divisions.

Grossklag beat Courtney Colton of Davie, 6-3, 6-1, to move into the Round of 16. Naples' Carly Morrison lost to Nikita Uberoi of Boca Raton, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 32.

Simidian defeated Rebekah Jenkins of Sarasota, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 to move into the Round of 16.

In the Boys 16s, Naples' Josh Dancu lost his third-round match to No. 8 seed Carl Eguez of Southwest Ranches, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, and Naples' Brett Clark lost to No. 15 seed Michael Alford of Tampa, 6-2, 6-4.

In the Boys 18s, Sean Spellberg of Naples lost to Luka Stanic of Boca Raton, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

In Girls 18s consolation, Naples' Heather St. John defeated Jana Motie of Melbourne, 7-6, 6-4.

In Girls 16s consolation, Naples' Natalie Maynetto beat fellow Naples resident Lindsey Raymond, 6-0, 6-0. Naples' Sophie Wyman lost to Astrid Omega of Royal Palm Beach, 6-1, 6-0.

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
