Local tennis: Grossklag, Simidian move into Bush Open quarterfinals

Top seeds Amy Grossklag of Bonita Springs and Amy Simidian of Naples moved into the quarterfinals of their respective divisions at the Bush Florida Open on Monday in Fort Myers.

Grossklag, competing in the Girls 16s, beat Nikita Uberoi of Boca Raton, 6-2, 6-3 and will play Julianne Gruber of Palm Harbor in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Palms.

Simidian, who’s in the Girls 18s, defeated No. 14 seed Danielle Terpko of Pompano Beach, 7-5, 6-3, and will face No. 9 seed Rebecca Bodine of Tarpon Springs Tuesday at 10 a.m. at The Landings.

In Boys 16s consolation, Naples’ Alejandro Perez lost to Timothy Rosensteel of New Jersey, 6-1, 6-1. Rosenteel will meet Naples’ Josh Dancu on Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Gulf Harbour. Naples’ Brett Clark also will play on Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Heritage Palms against Ross Nigro of Coral Gables.

Also in 16s, Naples’ Ryan Zanette lost his first consolation match to John Healey of Maryland, 6-2, 7-6. Naples’ Max Shumake won his first consolation match, 6-2, 6-2 over Evan Stutchin of Cape Coral, then lost to Ryan Kent of Maryland, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0. Naples’ Paul Johnson lost to Timmy Berg, 6-2, 6-4.

In Boys 18s consolation, Naples’ Sean Spellberg lost to Peter Carpenter of Bradenton, 6-0, 6-2.

In Girls 16s consolation, Naples’ Natalie Maynetto won her second and third consolation matches, beating Taylor Wingo, 6-2, 6-0, and Taylor Blau, 6-1, 6-0.

Naples’ Kristi Balavage defeated Astrid Omega, 7-5, 4-0 (retired).

Naples’ Leslie Raymond lost to Natalie Navarro, 6-2, 6-1, and Carly Morrison of Naples lost to Anna Silina, 7-6 (6), 6-0..

And Naples’ Jordyn Spellberg lost to Nisha Shah, 6-2, 6-1, after Shah had beaten Astrid Holbrechts of Naples, 6-0, 6-0.

In Girls 18s consolation, Naples’ Heather St. John lost to Molly Lentini, 6-3, 6-3.

The tournament continues at various sites in Fort Myers through Friday.
