Naples’ Erika Erndl gave it quite a shot, but came up short of qualifying for tonight’s women’s 400-meter individual medley final at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb., on Sunday afternoon.
Erndl, a 30-year-old who was a four-time All-American at North Carolina, improved a whopping 30 spots from her seeding going into the preliminaries.
Erndl, who competes for Naples-based Swim Florida, finished 16th out of 82 competitors following 11 heats. She had a time of 4:47.06. The top eight qualified for the finals. The eighth qualifier, Kathleen Hersey, was just under four seconds faster than Erndl.
“My race felt really good,’’ said Erndl, who beat her previous personal best by seven seconds. “I took the fly out a little too fast, but it was still a good race. I would have liked to have gone a little faster, obviously, but I can’t really complain about my time.”
Fort Myers’ Amy Modglin, who also competes for Swim Florida, was 43rd in 4:53.85.
Erndl will swim in the 100 breaststroke preliminary on Monday. Estero resident Chelsea Franklin will compete in the 400 freestyle preliminary, and if she qualifies, the final, also on Monday.
