The second day at the Langerado Music Festival brings the first of the weekend’s big name bands: The Beastie Boys take the stage at 9:30 p.m. But the day also brings and abundance of little known bands who pack quite a wallop. Note: Vampire Weekend, which was schedule for today, bailed to play “Saturday Night Live.”
The Walkmen (3:15 p.m.): The middle of the afternoon seems like a weird time to listen to a band whose sound is so rooted in the seedy underbelly of late-night living. It’s woozey, grimey, a little sticky and a whole lot of fun. There are some hints of Springsteen, but it’s more angular that the Boss.
!!! (6:45 p.m.): A little more disco than LCD Soundsystem and a little bit more rock ‘n’ roll than Hot Chip, !!! (most commonly pronouced chk, chk, chk) has found a place at the danciest end of the dance-pop craze that has had hipsters nodding their heads approvingly on the while still managing not to uncross their arms. Plus with topical song titles like “Me and Guiliani Down By the School Yard,” you gotta love their sense of humor.
Built to Spill (8:30 p.m.): These guys seem to be the perfect Langerado band, one part pop songwriters and one part jam band. Either way, it’s hard not to love the wonderful melodies delievered in Doug Martsch’s warbly falsetto. There’s a lot of Neil Young in this band, but also a lot of Dinosaur Jr’s guitar heroics.
