Softball: Unbeaten Pembroke Pines Charter favored in other semifinal

PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER (29-0) vs. GLEN ST. MARY-BAKER COUNTY (24-3)

WHAT: Class 4A semifinal

WHEN: Today at 2 p.m.

WHERE: Plant City Stadium

AT STAKE: Winner plays Naples/Groveland-South Lake winner in state final at 1 p.m. Saturday

OUTLOOK: Charter is the very definition of juggernaut, having outscored in-state opponents by a whopping 175-4 this season. The Jaguars, who lost back-to-back Class 4A championships in 2004-05, have steamrolled back to the final four on the strength of three straight shutouts, including a 3-0 win over Jensen Beach in the regional final. Lauren Sewell is 14-0 with a 0.16 ERA and has 166 strikeouts in 85.1 innings for Charter, while Shayla Jackson (.449, 24 RBIs) and Audrey Broyles (.432, 6 home runs) lead a lineup littered with sluggers. If anyone has the staff to quiet the Jags bats, though, it might be Baker County, which has two 10-game winners in Cami Craig (12-2, 1.36) and Tiffany Smith (10-1, 0.68). Meanwhile, the Wildcats have a pair of Ashleys who could be swinging the hottest bats in the final four. Sophomore Ashley Holton is batting .506 with 6 home runs and 33 RBIs, while junior Ashley Curry is at .500 with 24 RBIs.
