Florida Gulf Coast University's Pete Woodworth and outfielder Vinnie Scarduzio have been named the Atlantic Sun Conference's baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively.

The Eagles finished a sweep of ETSU on Sunday to clinch the A-Sun regular-season title on their inaugural year in the conference. FGCU is not eligible for the conference or NCAA tournaments because it's in a transitional phase of NCAA Division I.

Woodworth earned the Pitcher of the Week award after striking out a career-high 12 hitters over seven innings in pitching the Eagles to the A-Sun title, marking the first time a school in its first year in the A-Sun captured the overall regular-season title.

He joined Campbell’s Justin Lilly as the only pitchers in the conference to win consecutive Pitcher of the Week awards. The sophomore from St. Petersburg limited the Buccaneers, a team that was hitting over .300, to a .192 batting average.

Woodworth, an athletic training major, allowed ETSU five hits and a pair of walks. Over the past four starts, Woodworth has compiled 34 strikeouts in 28 innings, good for an average of 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings, while winning three of those four outings.

Scarduzio highlighted his stellar week by hitting a pair of homers and driving in three runs in the 6-2 title clinching win. During the 5-0 week, the senior from Jupiter registered four multi-hit games and at least one hit in all five. The criminal justice major scored eight times and drove in nine while hitting .545 and posting a slugging percentage of 1.091. The hot hitting shot Scarduzio’s average up almost 40 points, from .229 entering the week to its current mark of .268.

The Eagles play their final home game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Florida Atlantic, then play their final A-Sun series at USC Upstate, beginning on Thursday.
