Mack to host annual Service Academy Day Seminar
U.S. Rep. Connie Mack (R-Fort Myers) will host his fourth annual Service Academy Day Seminar on May 17.
The Service Academy Day Seminar, held this year on a Saturday, is designed for students who are interested in attending one of the nation’s service academies. The seminar will be an opportunity for students and parents to meet with representatives of the U.S service academies to discuss the application process, academy life and career opportunities within the various branches of the military.
This year’s Service Academy Day will be at the Student Union Ballroom at Florida Gulf Coast University. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9 a.m.
One of the responsibilities of Members of Congress is to nominate outstanding young men and women to the four U.S. service academies. The process of securing a nomination is highly competitive -- each applicant for nomination must demonstrate evidence of integrity, exceptional scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, and medical fitness, and strong motivation to attend an academy in order to serve as an officer in the armed services, the Merchant Marines or the Coast Guard.
Students who seek a nomination from Mack are interviewed by a nominating committee comprised of former military officers and enlisted personnel as well as community leaders from throughout Southwest Florida. The nominating committee then objectively rates each nominee on a variety of criteria for Mack’s consideration. Mack then nominates the best applicants to each academy.
